Hawaiifag here. I don't know about the chickens, but Polynesians did have pigs:the Polynesian hog was smaller and hairier than the pigs that Europeans domesticated. Polynesians took them acros the Pacific with them, though they weren't a major foodstuff: in ancient Hawaii, at least, hogs were consumed only in large family gatherings or on special occasions.

Chickens originate from asia, so polynesians could have had access to them.

Actually ran into one who was going on a full rant about cultural appropriation, and the 350 pound samoan dude next to me stood up, looked her in the eye, and started yelling at her for two minutes straight in his native language.

She was in complete tears saying she had no idea what he was saying, and he said "why do you think you can speak for my people then?"

Later, he told me he just said the navy seals copypasta and the theme to Danger mouse.

>>
>>83863570
You mean Kamapua'a? Pele's on-again-off-again boyfriend? He kind of represents primal sexuality in a way: a lot of the Hawaiian myths about him are about him chasing various women/goddesses/mythological creatures.
>>
>>83853110
actually that's exactly what he's saying

domesticated animals such as pigs, cows, etc, that's from europe and asia. Africa and the americas and oceana had nothing like that, they hunted for food, they didn't keep it.

domesticating animals is what allowed europe's population to balloon, and for huge cities to develop as well, and for tremendous diseases to kill people but make the people immune who survived. The average european's immune system was far beyond that of other countries and that's why they brought diseases to wherever they conquered. Horses were introduced to africa via the europeans, there's a bunch of examples

so yeah, oceana and the americas did not keep domesticated animals.

Chinese claim that the sweet potato comes from China because current Chinese can't imagine living without it. That doesn't make it true though.

Do you have a source on hogs being present in the middle of the Pacific Ocean before Europeans arrived? I'm skeptical because Polynesians reached South America, but South America was woefully short of domesticable animals like the hog.
>>
>>83864296
Nothing I can list off the top of my head. I'm quoting my Hawaiian Studies professor from college. I can tell you that the hogs that were here before Western contact interbred with their imported Western cousins to become a wild and invasive variant species: my father used to work for the National Park service in Kalaupapa, Molokai and they would have to periodically hunt down and winnow the wild populations of these critters.

The wild pig population I'm talking about is a different breed from the Western wild pig--they interbred with a Polynesian pig population that can be found throughout the Pacific. If you really wanna get technical about it, there have been mitochondrial DNA studies that trace the origins of this Polynesian pig back to SE Asia.
http://www.pnas.org/content/107/17/7686.full?sid=e27a8306-1d5f-4c9d-8408-2bc51821ae63
There are other cultural clues: myths of the pig god Kamapua'a (I mentioned him here >>83864118) that predate Western contact; the ancient Hawaiian method of cooking a pig, that again predates Western contact (an earthen oven called an imu), etc.

They showed a few clips from Moana at the Annecy festival. http://disneyanimationmoana.tumblr.com/post/146101025219/moana-clips-shown-at-annecy

The opening scene of the movie. After the appearance of the traditional Disney logo with Maori background music, a narrator explains the history of the world, presented in a graphic animation style similar to the one in the trailer. We later see Maui (in regular, CG animation this time) turning into a bird, a reptile and an insect before finally stealing the “heart” of the island and fleeing. While fighting a fire demon, he lets the “heart” sink to the bottom of the ocean and darkness engulfs the surrounding land. On this sad image, the narrator is revealed - an old lady telling this story to children.

The second extract showed Moana’s grandmother brings her to a cave when she was a child. By tapping on a drum, Moana receives a vision of the past where happy navigators are singing while arriving on the island.

In the third clip, Moana tries to rescue Hei Hei from the Kakamora tribe (a Minion-like tribe of coconut pirates). There’s an epic scene between two boats where our friend is trying to climb one of his opponents before attacking them described by the filmmakers as “Disney meets Fury Road,”.

In the last clip, we see Moana as a child playing in the sand. The she picks up a seashell and the water parts, creating a giant wave. Then we transition to Moana as an adult remembering her childhood.

Stop, just stop. Domestication is definetely NOT what allowed populations to bloom they had massive cities in the Americas particularly in the Mississippian cultures and central/southern American cultures. And finally, eastern and European cities did not get big off eating lots of pork and chicken, they got huge because they had a steady and reliable supply of FUCKING GRAINS. Romans eat absolutely massive amounts of wheat and bread, Chinese and south east asians ate shitalods of rice (and wheat/barely etc in northern china). Furthermore, the population boom in 13th century europe is usually more associated with a greater consumptiom of nutrious plant matter (like beans in particular which had good amounts of iron). Rather than them somehow managing to eat lots and lots of meat.

I would not be suprised if fish from finding nemo make brief cameos. Pixair used to do it all the time, sneaking assets from previous films into scenes.

>Africa and the americas and oceana had nothing like that
Have you fucking seen Animal Planet? How is a zebra not a goddamn horse? Or a hyena like a wolf?
>>
>>83874441
Zebra is more aggresive than the wild horse. People have attempted to simply tame them and it's extremely difficult.
>>
I bet the bad guy is a shoobie trying to commercialize the island.
>>
>>83864199
America and Oceania, yeah, for the MOST part true, but Africa? Fuck off. They had plenty of domestication in Africa, look at the maasai.
>>
>>83874503
Isn't there a distinction between taming and domestication?

>>
>>83875183
Oh yes. In the most simplistic and reductionist terms I can think of, a circus lion is "tame" your pet dog is "domesticated". Domestication is somethng genetic, developed over years by careful breeding. Taming is just taught behavior..
>>
>>83874292
This is true

I'm pretty excited for this movie, especially considering the focus will be on a Demigod's wife instead of him. Hopefully it'll be better then just a Hercules clone, but who knows. Plus, I could always use more non-standard mythology.
>>
>>83875237
Fun fact: No one was ever able to domesticate elephants or breed them, despite being regularly used as beasts of burden and war for millennia. Every elephant used for such purposes was captured in the wild.
>>
>>83875320
Wikipedia actually has a big list of animals that are domesticated and animals that are tamed

Correct, but brats of burden allowed a much smaller proportion of the citizenry to produce good for everyone. That meant Afro-Eurasia had more specialists.

But yeah, Amerindians were super productive. The capital of the Aztecs, Tenochticlan, had a larger population than London.

Well... what do you want? The main thing Olmec-derived civilizations are famous for is not kid-friendly or good for PR. How could they make an "authentic" story and ignore that? I guess they could do something with the ball game.

Guam boy here.

I always thought that Finding Nemo was the closest I'd get to a worldwide theatrical cartoon depicting the kind of culture and stories I grew up hearing.

This is surreal. The color palette alone gives me goosebumps.

Elephants wouldn't really work as domesticated animals anyway, since they take about the same time as a human to grow up. If you wanted a specific trait to emerge in them, like we've done with dogs, cats, pigs and many more, it would take centuries.

You might not recognize it, since American fat doesn't tend to have muscle in it.
