After the movie and season six came along the show just took a dive towards Rock Bottom, the characters weren't as charming, the plots were stupid, and it just didn't have the same feel.

I'm glad the creator addressed and set that as the "canon".
Something I dislike about "x show: The movie" is how the stakes and style ramp up beyond of what the show was about, which is fine since this is the big picture and your stakes have to be bigger. However, if the show continues after that and reverts back to minor stuff without anyone addressing what happened it just feels weird.
Big examples of this are the Rugrats movies and the Hey Arnold movie (the latter slightly more understandable since The Jungle Movie was suppose to be the one in theaters) although the formers did made note of SOME of the stuff that happened in the movies.
Must be just me but I do prefer The Movie to be the finale as it makes you clear the stakes cannot be ramped up more than this. It's also why Ed Edd & Eddy Big Picture Show works so well.
If this have been the last of Spongebob the series would have closed golden.
