What's the difference between the old Simpsons' celebrity guest star-based episodes and the new Simpsons' heavily criticized equivalents?

A good Simpsons celebrity guest star is one who serves the plot and has the piss taken out of them.

A bad Simpsons celebrity guest star gets praised and has the whole episode revolve around them.

Spinal Tap is an example of good celebrity guest star. They serve the plot by making Bart want to become a rock star and they have the piss taken out of them by making them preform in a unsafe hockey ring.

They're also introduced in a fairly realistic scenario. They come to Springfield to preform a show. They don't go to the Simpsons' house because they want to hang out with a 10 year old boy from a small town.

Judad priest was fine, lady gaga was terrible

Remember when Lady Gaga did that?

Well, for one, Harry Shearer is already a voice actor on the Simpsons so having him and his mates cameo isn't that much of a stretch.

Having fucking Metallica in the 00s cameo is.

Metallica was boring, not a bad cameo.

Potayto, Potahto

A bad cameo ruins an episode, a boring cameo is just a boring joke

It's best if the guest star plays someone other than themselves. Dustin Hoffman and Danny DeVito were top tier, even Michael Jackson playing not Michael was good.

Michael Jackson was so into the joke he actually turned himself into white Michael Jackson, absolute madman.

The difference with this particular one is that Shearer got paid twice for plugging his own VHS re-release, so he never bitched about it even though the last 60 seconds are just dead air.

The Metallica cameo was mean-spirited enough for me to smile at it.
>Hey, loser! We got a ride from a real fan!
>Never listen to our music again!

The big difference between that and something like the Lady Gaga one is that they unironically introduced her as a benevolent superstar.

That makes them bad guest stars, because it's just a retread of the movie.

The episode was literally made to tie-in to a re-release.
