Nah, the middle served to give the characters some final development, in order to provide a sense of where they would end up. The entire Edd and Eddy conflict existed to show that the Eds would always be friends, for example. Also it was a fun journey, showed places outside of the cul-de-sac and school, and was kind of necessary to make things movie-length.
