People want - possibly need - to shortcut straight to professionalism in their work. There's not much middleroom for average artists anymore. There's no daily newspaper comics which cycle out for everyone to read; it's cemented into the same ones everywhere. There's no crappy animation project to jump onto; it's all big toy business. So you have people studying the older styles and developing based off that, rather than developing their own style, because they still need to work and they'll only get a job if they can make something which works like that.
