I don't there will ever be another series. Nickelodeon hated the Korra ratings so much that they actually pulled the show from television completely at one point and only aired it online.

Avatar was fine on Nick but Korra was aimed at older teenagers and their actual audience was more interested in Spongebob re-runs.

Series 3 would be possible if Nick sold the Avatar rights to a company like Netflix to create an online series, but they never will.

Also Series 3 would have to be set in the past, like based on Kyoshi or something. The technology got too advanced in Korra and made bending almost obsolete.

Instead of the sick bending choreography and dynamic fights that we got in Avatar/at some points in Korra (pic related), we got mech slug-fests. Culminating in a giant mech final boss.

Which is what would happen if Amon won like people wanted and clamored for back then. And yet people wanted bending to go away and for Amon to gain victory and everyone lose their bending forever because consequences.

The only difference would be Korras amount of bending being restricted to Airbending. And most also wanted Korra to regain her bending through a story arc, possibly season 2.

Only in terms of fighting large scale battles, and even then benders were able to find a way to damage and destroy Kuvira's mech. Non-benders on a whole are still useless in combat. If anything the bending in Korra was a lot more deadly.

>more firebenders who can generate lightning
>metalbending has been honed to the point where people can basically throw knives at you
>bloodbenders who don't need a full moon exist
>ripping the air out of someone's lungs

People kept wanting the United Republic of Nations to fall and for things to domino effect and for things to ramp up while Dick and Dickless traveled around and "taught" Korra had to bend again since they knew more about bending than her or something.

It's a strange feeling, wanting and hoping for something so dramatically, but knowing deep down it will never fucking happen. Nick would never sell the rights to Netflix. What's worse is that Netflix could a great new series that would have blown Korra out of the water, but Nick is just too greedy.

I can still dream...maybe one day...
>>
>>83806807
There were many solutions to it. Some had to do with spirits and the spirit world. My point was though that Korra not getting the power to bring back bending would matter very little as the only two returning characters that lost bending were Korra and Lin. And Korra still had bending so there was no need to up technology.

He thought it was funny, that's pretty much the only reason why. It was also the first episode I showed him, to be fair. I always thought the first two episodes were pretty boring and only got interested towards the end of the first season. I wanted to show him an episode that was fairly spoiler free and The Great Divide was the only episode that doesn't really show much that happened in previous episodes, besides Appa flying and Momo being part of the team.

Korra stole Mako twice

>shown hanging out and getting along
they are only shown to hang out in S03, for no apparent reason, and right after Korra cucked Asami again with Mako and then ditch him.

>Asami at least is clearly interested
you mean she is clearly 'a friend' by S03; not interested.
>>
>>83813089
one of the many failings of this show is that the designated core group of friends had no compelling reason to be friends or even be around each other at all. They just weren't believable as a group of people who would actually hang out together if given the option. Having the basic, bread-and-butter social interaction of the main cast fail so badly was one of the shows biggest failings, though it wasn't its most spectacular or attention-grabbing failure and thus tends to get glossed over in discussions of where and how the show went wrong
>>
>>83813089
>Korra stole Mako

Takes two to tango. She kissed him but he didn't have to drop Asami and run to Korra and suddenly love her. No stealing was done.

Asami's reason is that since she has no character and exists only for love drama then she only went along rather than just give them an airship was because she hates being behind a desk all day and wants to travel. Then she probably saw Korra with her hair down and in her casual sleeping clothes and that was the end of that.

Korra has no reason though. Asami could at least be given a reason since she has nothing else to her.
>>
>>83813247
That's one of the major things that people bring up. But it tends to get divided into:

Have Korra and the older characters interact and carry the story.

Have someone else be the Avatar in her place as though that character would suddenly be written well.

Have the show focus on people other than the naturally gifted, rich and famous, or world leaders.

And the most popular one being just have the Gaang continue since we already know them and the world they are in so you don't have to start from scratch with new people.
>>
>>83813247
Eh, I could buy Mako, Bolin and Korra hanging out together. Two of them are brothers, they spent time as teammates, the brothers are Korra's first friends ever and they seem to like the adventure filled world that comes with being around the avatar.

I never understood why did Asami stick with them after Mako dumped her.
>>
>>83813288
>Takes two to tango
Both times, she is literally made the first move. Taking both to do it or not, the fact that she started it means she is a backstabber for not respecting her friend. Think for a second: you have a girlfriend, and then someone you thought was your friend starts dating her. Are you really going to keep being friends with that guy?

>she hates being behind a desk all day
Some people call that a job, and it's kind of important. The thing is, everyone had better things to do at S03 and they al 'magically' were attratted to go with Korra. Still, it was very clear that Asami resented Korra and Mako by the end of S02 and they left it unresolved. It really makes you wonder why are they friends in the first place.
>>
>>83813512
>Still, it was very clear that Asami resented Korra and Mako by the end of S02 and they left it unresolved. It really makes you wonder why are they friends in the first place.
The only explanation is that Asami is a cynical, sociopathic industrial tycoon who considers a personal relationship with the Avatar to be a critically important business asset. And to be fair, Korra does tend to go around destroying things and creating markets for Asami's war machines while simultaneously shielding Asami and her other friends from the consequences. Asami probably sees Korra as a sort of black ops asset that she can set loose on a region to create demand for her products
>>

>The thing is, everyone had better things to do at S03 and they al 'magically' were attratted to go with Korra.

Bolin had nothing. Mako should have stayed in the city and done his police job but then the other characters might develop or be useful and we can't have that.
Tenzin had a job in that he was on the council. But we saw how effective he was, he may as well have not been there especially considering how he acts like it is always like this and talks to Korra like Tarrlok has always been this way. Asami could have staff who do the work for her while she's out and about but to dive into that might take away from a joke or two and would require Bryke to give a damn.

>and then someone you thought was your friend starts dating her. Are you really going to keep being friends with that guy?

I, apparently, broke up with my girlfriend off screen. Or so I think I did.

She kissed him, she didn't do anything else and in the same episode she says she was wrong to do that. The reason they didn't get Asami's input on this until later was 1.) drama and 2.) Bryke and 3.) drama

Why doesn't sage work. I keep getting upload failed. Do I need a 4chan gold membership now or something?

At least that would lead to something to do with the FN in LoK's time besides their navy or leaders showing up. At least we don't have to worry about Azula's VA voicing her, although she doubtless could do a far better job of it than Basco.

It's a little bit more complicated than that. Aang and Katara marry, but his main relationship is with Zuko and Katara's first two kids were fathered by Sokka, who is also possibly the father of Toph's second daughter. Sokka himself ends up with Suki but it's unclear if they have any children. Zuko has a daughter that obviously couldn't have come from Aang so he most have had relations with a woman. The most probable contenders at this point are either Ursa or Azula but it isn't clear with the current canon information.

The character designs were better for LoK, but TLA had far better characters.
>>
>>83819612

>character designs were better for LoK

Don't delude yourself, they weren't even close. TLA took in tons of well rounded inspiration. LoK for the most part is just lazy casual clothing everywhere. Not even the Unaloq nor the Red Lotus dressed in any grandeur fashion distinguishable for their status.
>>
>>83819710
Red Lotus dressing in grand clothes would contradict their characters, since they loved equality and were wanted criminals who wouldn't want to stand out.
>>
>>83819742

Red Lotus in general was extremely wishy washy and contradictory all over. But I get your point.

Agreed.
It's overlooked behind the characters and the setting and story etc. but the concept of bending is nothing short of genius in terms of a magic system.
It's so easy to understand yet it's always exciting and dynamic. I know it's unpopular to credit Bruke with anything but they absolutely knocked it out of the park with bending.
It's also absolutely perfect for the medium. It's visually interesting without being visceral, like realistic violence, so it can be featured in a family show without it feeling like th action is being too neutered or dumbed down.
>>

>>
>>83820402
In terms of visually interesting, that's partly because of the real life basis. Tai chi for watervebding and all made it realistic.

To be honest it stresses me out because whenever I want to create any power system for story telling I am reminded of how inadequate it is compared to avatar.
>>
>>83814593

3.) No love relationship drama
4.) The characters have a reason for being there
>>
>>83820402
Was it their idea though? I heard they wanted to make a cyberpunk show until Nick told them they wanted a fantasy show instead. So maybe the bending idea wasn't theirs.

Cyberpunk with elements. They worked with Sifu Kisu and together they developed bending.

Then, much like the Flavor of the Month, they started watching MMA and wanted that in the lore which confused Kisu and he barely ended up helping in the first season then went on to do other things.

>>
>>83821889
I'd agree, but not sure if you mean in a shippy way for Bolin and Asami. Personally i'd prefer Borra, and just more "filler" to flesh out the characters.

>>83821905
They also hired a tricking expert for LoK as a martial arts instructor, which is probably why there is so much weird acrobatics in it.
>>
>>83821925
I meant just normal interaction. Definitely more non plot related need. Its what made ATLA so great, it build up the characters and the universe. Korra felt like a weird dystopia a bit, I had no idea how things were.

Immediately we understood there were little communities with their own ideas about the war from Kyoshi Island episode, and we saw how THE FIRE NATION was effecting the world, negatively. It was good

Absolutely agreed.

They managed to get something visually exciting, something that can be varried with tons of different fighting styles, and something not excessively violent, but still effective. If nothing else, they got bending perfectly. It even had a nice amount of mystery around it.

But just like a lot of things in Korra, it got fucked up. We didn't need the First Avatar/Spirti World stuff to explain bending; the mystery surrounding it was evocative and enigmatic, and it worked. Also, the Harmonic Convergence stuff was pure bullshit.
>>
>>83821784
Bending was definitely Bryan's idea. He's an old style Kung Fu movie fan and is an amateur martial artist himself. A lot of the fleshing out came from Sifu Kisu because he's insanely knowledgable about that kind of shit but a lot of the ground work was Bryan's.

The sci-fi stuff was the original concept but they scrapped it when Bryan watched a documentary about the Shackleton voyage and wanted to base part of the story about a society that lives at the polar caps.
>>
>>83822288
The sci fi concept was scrapped because Nick told them they didn't want a sci fi series.

Don't know about the bending though. I just have a hard time believing bryan did much with it desu.
>>
>>83821458
I think what I've taken from it is that simple, well defined and limited systems work the best. They're quick for an audience to pick up and everyone knows what people are capable of.

Naga suffered from the same tech-jump that the tone in general suffered from. The avatar had a cool animal companion and mount in the original show, so of course the new Avatar has to have one too... except now everybody drives a car, or rides an airship. Naga has no place in LoK's setting, of course she gets left by the show's wayside.
>>
>>83824429
I really think the show should have dropped the whole mythical side (I mean completely not just half arsing it) and reflected stories of it's time in Asia like Avatar reflected stories of it's time frame

Would have been a big jump and may have put people off but I think the show would have been better for it
>>
>>83824475
I'm the opposite, i think they should have dropped the whole uber technology angle and kept the fantasy setting.

Then Amons equality problem would also have seemed more compelling.
>>
>>83824475
The mythical stuff is what drew me to Avatar in the first place, I probably wouldn't have watched a sequel that dropped it entirely. As it was, I didn't even finish Korra when it became clear how badly they were handling that stuff.

The show probably would have been better for having a more focused tone, but at that point I have to wonder why make it an Avatar show at all?
>>
>>83824326
>and Asami
That's not fair, the melon lord and even Haru had more personality than Asami
>>
I'm in a forgein country right now where they still show two episodes of avatar every night. So many things about this show is great. So much depth. And the team dynamic. I wish I had the ability to express myself better so I could rave about how amazing ATLA is.
>>
>>83824429
Pretty much, Appa always remained relevant because he was also the gaang's home and their getaway vehicle.
>>
>>83824475
>>83824508

I thought that they had a good premise, actually. Where do mythical arts fit into a world that's catching up, technologically? I'm also a big fan of the early-20th century Hong Kong vibe.

The problem is that they dropped the ball on both sides - they fucked up the spiritual stuff (especially in S2, when they tried delving too much into the past and the whole big spirit battle). They fucked up the tech/mechanical stuff by making Amon a bender (and thus destroying the whole "anti v bender" thing going on) and then not actually focusing on how the world had changed (like having giant fucking metal bender robots).

>>83824671
I'm currently re-watching it with some friends in order to get one of them to finally see the show (the rest of us have seen it already). It's really just spectacular what they managed to accomplish. But they couldn't catch lighting in a bottle twice.
>>
>>83824671
All in all despite its original target audience now being older, it still managed to be more mature and well written than TLOK was
>>
>>83824705
Oh yeah the idea of a plot focusing on Mysticism/spirituality vs technology is good. But you can't have that story if you exclude the mysticism. And as you said they failed to actually tell that story.
>>
>>83824804
>Oh yeah the idea of a plot focusing on Mysticism/spirituality vs technology is good. But you can't have that story if you exclude the mysticism. And as you said they failed to actually tell that story.

I don't think they excluded the mysticism so much as they destroyed it. A bit of mystery is good. Ambiguity isn't always an issue. But instead of allowing bending, spirituality, and the related issues to keep their vagueness the writers decided to fuck it all up by creating a shitty history and then throwing in forces of Absolute Good and Absolute Evil.

Not caring, of course, that a big part of the original show was that there was certainly a spectrum between good and bad, and that that kind of black and white, good v. bad thinking wasn't good. ATLA was all about Balance, and Korra shit all over that.
>>
>>83824804
I would have much preferred technology as an extension of the mysticism. I mean, in Avatar-verse, lightning is literally made of chi divided into its yin and yang halves, rather than electrons. I would have loved a setting where all of this technology is the product of technicians and sages working in conjunction. If your car breaks down, the machinist at the garage is the one who has to replace the stripped gear, but it's his partner the monk who has to rejigger the car's artificial chakras so that chi properly flows through the car's body, like some kind of automotive feng shui.
>>
>>83824880
I was mostly refering to this:
>I really think the show should have dropped the whole mythical side (I mean completely not just half arsing it)
When i said you shouldn't exclude mysticism.

Otherwise i agree completely with you.

>>83824927
That could also have been an interesting take on it. Maybe that should have been the result of Book 2: Spirits. So that instead of Bending and spirits moving away from eachother they end up complementing eachother instead.

Now i'm aware that Book 2 didn't really manage to focus on that issue (technology vs spirits) or even a lack of spirituality in this new world.

There's a lot of bad in Beginnings part 1 and 2. But the art was nice and captured the myth feel of the flashback quite well.

>making Amon a bender (and thus destroying the whole "anti v bender" thing going on)
It could have worked, with a self-hating or idealistic bender instead of the conman we got. A lot of social revolutions were started by members of the ruling class. Same with Unalaq, he would have been great with an once of subtlety.
I wonder how they managed fuck up all their villains so much. They seem decent in the first episodes, but then go in Eviiiiiiil territory every time.
And worse of all, there was no overarching plot. Avatar had season specific villains linked by a purpose, Korra had nothing of the sort, and every organisation crumble once the leader has been taken out.
How hard was it to bring the lieutenant back and continue the Equalist conflict ? And "Keep balance" isn't an objective, it isn't finite.
