Karkat feels like the male version of a female character who starts off fun and interesting with a story and arc of her own and then becomes a bland romantic prop for the main character when the creator decides to ship them. Being gay doesn't make this trope any less disappointing or shitty to people who were fans of the character that became a cardboard cutout. We see Dave talking about his newfound emotional openness and revelations about his sexuality, but we know jack shit about what the relationship did for Karkat, and given how depressed he sounded post-retcon it doesn't seem to have done much for him at all.
