Okay, I want to play the Injustice games, but only really know about Batman and Superman. I'm vaguely familiar with Wonderwoman, Green Lantern, Aquaman, and a handful of villians, but couldn't tell you much about them save for their super powers.
I know that the Injustice stuff is like an alternate ending to the 'main' series or whatever, so I don't think I should read any rebirth stuff. I also don't want the complete history of DC so I can recognize how awesome this costume is.
So, what can I read/watch/play to get a good backstory on most/every character in Injustice 1/2/comic?

It's a pretty broad spectrum of characters but it really just depends on what you want to do. If you want to read then starting off with some of of these JL books or some New 52 runs should help. Otherwise you could watch Arrow/Flash or some of the older animated stuff like BTAS, STAS and Justice League, plus most of their animated movies are pretty good. After your more familiar then start reading Injustice. You won't know absolutely everyone since there's tons of characters that show up but you should at least be familiar with most by that point.

All of these animated films are great for character backstory and some give several character examples. I would say though that for green lantern first flight or emerald knights would be a good choice. Emerald knights gives more of a history of the green lantern corps and a better idea of what a lantern is capable of.

I've been thinking about what characters are going to be kept/added based on cross media interest.
The main points of recognizability are the live action movies and shows, the Justice League cartoon, Teen Titans and TTGO cartoons, and the Arkham games.
Based on this I think we can say Deadshot is the single most likely addition, and possibly Captain Boomerang.
I think all five Titans are a shoo in as well due to the massive popularity of the cartoons. The only thing I wonder about is if Nightwing will serve to represent Robin or if they'll do a separate character for a younger, more nimble Robin.
Red Hood is probably the second most likely addition, due to his popularity with the Injustice audience.
Another thing I'm unsure of is whether the Justice League cartoon is going to matter anymore. It might not still hold enough clout to keep Hawkgirl in the game. Wally is the only character from the show's lineup to not be in the game, though that's easily rectified by a skin like John.
Finally I think the most likely character without cross media prominence is Booster Gold, discounting the rumored characters. He's the perfect "fan cred" character.

Well considering how Netherrealm like to reuse assets I'd say Deadshot is likely in that he could play very very similarly to a mix of Deathstroke and Erron Black minus the pocket sand and sword attacks. I could honestly see Deathstroke being cut for Deadshot.
Younger Robin would be really cool but they'd likely just keep Nightwing. I'd be interested to see how they do Beast Boy.
As much as I like Jason I can't help but think of the cool characters that could get in above him. I wouldn't want a ton of gun characters.

Safe bet would be that they incorporate things from Sub-Zero's X moveset like Ice Blast, Slide, and Ground Ice since they could all be replicated with his gun. Cyber Sub-Zero's Ice Bomb is also possible since Snart is so tech based and him having Ice Bombs wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility.
