>With great power comes great responsibility.
This is nothing but slave morality, attempting to siphon power away from the people who've earned it, to the powerless.
The only responsibility powerful men have is to enrich their own lives, and if that includes rightfully subjugating the powerless then so be it.
The less worthy will always attempt to steal from the powerful, and they need to be put down and taught who their masters are like the filthy dogs they are.

Rand was right. The less wealthy are evil ingrate parasites who steal mercilessly from the real producers and innovators who have made our worthless shit hole of a planet tolerable to live in. The socialist systems the west is suffering under today are nothing but pyramid schemes relying on eternally expanding population growth. It's all falling apart now, which is why Europe is importing millions of low IQ savages in a panic to save their sinking ship. The masses are mindless cattle who ride on the coattails of the accomplishments of a very few number of great men, and they imagine these accomplishments to be their own. Why would any rational human being allow the masses any say in the role or activities in government when they will always do nothing but vote the entire nation into utter ruin? We need a fascist dictatorship who advocate for a free market, we need a Pinochet to cleanse our countries of this genetically dysfunctional communist filth.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.
>>
>>83603429
Did they invent the underlying systems and technologies that fuel our societies? No, they're mindless workhorses, nothing more. Robots will soon replace those millions, and after that they can just die off like the useless pieces of meat they are.

It always baffled me how the heroes of Rand's novels were the actual most worthless people in their world, the kind of people who had no skills other than paying other people to do things for them. Like, she should at least have made them some type of impossible Tony Stark level supergeniuses who personally invented everything their company produces, but instead she just made them random rich people who would never survive a week without the help of the so-called "parasites".

Except that statement isn't about siphoning power, and your reading of it suggests you are bound by slave morality yourself.

"Great power, great responsibility" is a reflection of the fact that the more powerful you are, the more consequences your actions have. It's also a statement of the fact that with great power, you are at a higher risk of adversely affecting your life through its misuse.

I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

>>
>>83603620
Dawkins regrets everything he does because he's an obsessive sperg with little forsight to the obvious social reactions of his work.
Him finding something to perpetually complain or feel superior about in comparison to larger society is literally a driving character trait.

Anyhow think there's a bit of disconnect in that most people assume selfishness to assume 'true/total' selfishness. Instead of simple an extension of the old Bedouin saying "I against my brother, my brother and I against my cousin, and my cousin and I against the stranger" which results in a logicly expanding heirarchy radiating out to contain the entire human species.

This entire unconscious hierarchy is based upon genetic selfishness, but is not absolute, as memetic selfishness (shared cultures or ideas) may override it dependent on the individual's values (ex: on occasion a family may give up a member criminal, not out of fear of reprisal by the larger world, but out of rejection of the ideas that member's crime embodies.)

>>
>>83603441
That's not how genetics work. If selfless people die without passing on their genes, then their selfless genes don't propagate.

It's only "selfish" when you die for your own offspring, and even then we're abusing the definition of "selfish".

I'll point out that only a society may determine what is 'Insane' one is only insane if mentally incompatible with the functioning within that society.

One example is schiztophrenics who put butter in the attic to 'appease the faries' or go into 'prophetic fits' are perfectly functional individuals in a society that strongly believes in magical values.

This makes insanity a meaningless charge when applied to post-societal philosophies.

>>
>>83603849

It can also be interpreted as the responsibility to use your power, rather than let it go to waste.

In many ways, a person with great wealth and personal power who does NOTHING with it and just rests on their laurels is worse than a person who has failed to achieve anything in the first place. The presumed 'lesser man' lacks the ability to do great things, but they waste few resources in the process and there is the potential excuse that they simply never had the resources or opportunity to reach their potential in the first place. Not everyone does, after all.

But if you have power or wealth, and you do fucking nothing with it, then you explicitly have the resources and opportunity to do something great and have personally chosen not to. This doesn't just impact you, resources are finite. You being powerful and wealthy means that, by opportunity cost, someone else is not. So soaking up wealth and sitting on it prevents others from using that wealth for useful things.

Now, this doesn't mean that what you should be doing is helping everyone else around you. That's obviously a valid use of your power, and one many people would appreciate, but funding your own private projects or investing into the development of new technologies are also good.

To put this back int he scope of spiderman, Peter with his spider powers has a power that no one else does. A perfectly normal person chosing not to go and fight Venom is understandable, they lack the power and skill to meaningfully impact that problem. But if Peter, with all of his power, makes the same choice to do nothing? That carries a much greater weight, because he actually CAN do something about it. The very act of inaction means letting people that could be saved die, and letting problems that could be stopped continue. This gives Peter a much greater personal responsibility over the outcome of the scenario than the vast majority of people, even if he never shows up to the fight.

What a wonderfully vague way to dismiss a post. Legitimately impressive.

If I say I am not an atheist, I take your statement as a personal criticism and then that becomes the new topic of conversation, dragging religion into the mix and distracting from the original topic.

If I say I am an atheist, then that gives you an out to make a show of tossing out the whole argument based on that fact alone.

In neither case are you required to explain how that has anything to do with the topic whatsoever, and its vague enough that you can use it in response to basically any argument on 4chan with much the same results.

A masterful distraction technique.

> Now, this doesn't mean that what you should be doing is helping everyone else around you. That's obviously a valid use of your power, and one many people would appreciate, but funding your own private projects or investing into the development of new technologies are also good.

Using power to help the powerless is a valid choice, but the important part is to use the precious opportunity that you have to try and do something worthy of the chance you have. Using money and power to gain more money and power in an infinite loop with no actual payoff is just wasteful. Because you soak up resources and power for yourself, but you never plan on DOING anything with it.

Atheism is the absence of belief in a God or the belief of the absence of God.
If you believe there is a God that is almighty and allows for bad things to happen to good people, that doesn't make you an atheist.
In fact that literally makes you a theist.

Ayn Rand didn't seem to understand this, in her mind consumers were irrelevant to how succesful a business was

>Now project the mentality of a savage, who can grasp nothing but the concretes of the immediate moment, and who finds himself transported into the midst of a modern, industrial civilization. If he is an intelligent savage, he will acquire a smattering of knowledge, but there are two concepts he will not be able to grasp: "credit" and "market."

>Then the savage observes that the department stores are full of wonderful goods, but people do not seem to buy them. "Why is that?" he asks a floorwalker. "We don't have enough of a market," the floorwalker tells him. "What is that?" he asks. "Well," his new teacher answers, "goods are produced for people to consume, it's the consumers that make the world go 'round, but we don't have enough consumers." "Is that so?" says the savage, his eyes flashing with the fire of a new idea. Next day, he obtains a check from a big educational foundation, he hires a plane, he flies away—and comes back, a while later, bringing his entire naked, barefoot tribe along. "You don't know how good they are at consuming," he tells his friend, the floorwalker, "and there's plenty more where these came from. Pretty soon you'll get a raise in pay." But the store, pretty soon, goes bankrupt.

>The poor savage is unable to understand it to this day—because he had made sure that many, many people agreed with his idea, among them many noble tribal chiefs, such as Governor [George, not Mitt] Romney, who sang incantations to "consumerism," and warrior Nader, who fought for the consumers' rights, and big business chieftains who recited formulas about serving the consumers, and chiefs who sat in Congress, and chiefs in the White House, and chiefs in every government in Europe, and many more professors than he could count.

>Therefore, they conclude, the consumer—not the producer—is the motor of an economy. Let us extend credit, i.e., our savings, to the consumers—they advise—in order to expand the market for our goods.

>But, in fact, consumers qua consumers are not part of anyone’s market; qua; consumers, they are irrelevant to economics. Nature does not grant anyone an innate title of “consumer”; it is a title that has to be earned—by production. Only producers constitute a market—only men who trade products or services for products or services.

None taken, you are completely welcome to hang around a black people that are almost twice as likely to rob or assault you. You are a big boy and I'm sure your posturing of pet minorities gets you plenty of virtue points.

Look at data from Chinatown to Chiraq, notice how the crime tends to drop significantly despite the new immigrants being in usually worse financial straights than the local blacks? But no, I'm sure the magical patches of land other minorities and whites live in is totally the thing holding the black man down. Because Section 8 totally helps rise them up and doesn't kill property values and increase crime.

This line isn't about sharing your power. It's about using your power for good. Uncle Ben is saying "look Peter, when you are capable of doing incredible things, don't use that power to hurt people like a maniac. Try to be a decent person and use that power to help people and make others happy. Doing this will make you happy in return and more people will respect you in the long run." this is further illustrated at the end of the movie when the New Yorkers on the bridge distract the green goblin long enough for spiderman to help the kids.

The salesman explained that; no one was buying the merchandise to begin with. The story doesn't make any sense, the business was already failing, "We don't have enough of a market." The story would work as a critique of bailouts or subsidies, but it doesn't as a critique of consumerism. If anything the fault lies with the company itself, as it was unable to manufacture or respond to market demand.

Actually, if you think about it. What got Uncle Ben killed was not Peter trying to benefit himself with his powers, which he continues to do throughout the comic through his work taking pictures of himself for the Daily Bugle, but Peter choosing to not use them for the express purpose of getting back at someone who wronged him, such as the fight promoter in the movie.

In this instance, he is using his power to obtain satisfaction for himself expressly at the expense of someone else. The fight promoter and the robber are also guilty of this by using his authority to renege on the paying Peter and by using the power granted by having a gun to rob people, respectively.

This theme carries over to some of Spidey's rogues as well. From technologically gifted individuals like Shocker and Vulture who use their powers to take advantage of those who cannot do what they can instead of doing legitimate business to those like Electro who by all rights be much more of a threat than he is often portrayed as but isn't because he can't use his powers intelligently.

So, the moral is less "you are bound to help people if you have", which in some circumstances is impossible as you cannot help everyone, which is perhaps driven home most blatantly with the death of Gwen Stacey, and more do what you can and don't abuse your gifts. Spider-Man lives in New York, and it's impossible for him to be everywhere at once and stop every injustice that occurs, but he doesn't have to exploit the citizens either, and him making use of both his smarts and his spider powers isn't inherently wrong either both through Parker Industries and his heroism activities..
