I get it, though. Its not like he is honoring Kal-El, he is taking back the name from an alien creature he doesn't see as even being worthy of the Super*man* name.
But it feels to me like Luthor is just too vain to steal another name over self-promoting his own. That Luthor should have a big L on his chest, and instead of reappropriating his enemy's name that he would initiate events to drag the Superman name permanently down into the mud.
