a lot of things seem kind of overdiagnosed, especially for kids.

1.5% seems awfully high. the only person I ever met who I knew for a fact was autistic was a kid who never did any work in class and was obsessed with trains.

I mean I know it's a "spectrum" but there seems to be a huge gap between that and someone who might just be socially awkward.
>>
>>83527887
Are you autistic? Because I am and I don't find that line offensive.
People should have the option to change things they don't like about themselves.

>I mean I know it's a "spectrum" but there seems to be a huge gap between that and someone who might just be socially awkward.
It's just a difference in priorities; I COULD try to be more social, but I just don't want to. Maybe other people have some natural urge to be liked? I just don't give a fuck about playing games in being accepted by other people, and for some reason other people are offended. It isn't that I am incapable, it's just that being sociable is one giant lie and I want no part of it.

From my perspective, networking and making pretend-friends to benefit my career is just dishonest. But it seems most people who aren't me don't see it as lying.
>>
>>83528224
Well you're doing a great job at whatever your goal is right now.
>>
>>83528123
The thing is that autism is aa brain condition, not an actual illness. I don't find it particularly offensive, but It is akin to saying something like "I'm trying to find a cure to homosexuality". I agree that people should be able to change things about themselves that they don't like but society is so sensitive nowadays that the mere implication of a condition like autism being bad can trigger the masses.
>>
>>83528271
>Well you're doing a great job at whatever your goal is right now.
Well maybe that's what autism is; people like me don't need to be anonymous on a messagew board to actually act like ourselves. You other people wear masks in your day to day and only bitch and moan on the internet where people don't know you. We Autists have no need to be anonymous to act like what we really are.
>>
>>83527950
>>83528075

It's tricky, because on one hand, it could be lazy parents and pill pushers making deals that exploit maybe weird but rather typically-functioning kids

But on the other hand, disorders and defects and syndromes and what have you were all but shoved under the rug until fairly recently. Nobody fuckin talked about them. So Autism statistics got cracked open a little bit when people actually began acknowledging and classifying the disease, but over time, more was understood about it and therefore diagnoses were more prevalent.

Or the internet is like an acquired brain injury, and we're all a little retarded when we're here.
>>
>>83528395
>You other people wear masks in your day to day
Not necessarily. One's persona isn't in essence a mask, but could merely be a single element of one's supposed self. There's not really a separation of the "true self" from the "mask," the mask is simply an element of the true self. One acts differently around one's parents than they do around their friends, and again differently around one's significant other. They don't necessarily act in a false manner in any of the given scenarios, but each brings out a different element in one's person. The difficulty lies not in wearing the mask, but in understanding each persona as an element of one's "true self." It's a composite image.
>>
>>83528551
>One acts differently around one's parents than they do around their friends, and again differently around one's significant other.
Well that's the thing; I DO NOT do this. I act the same no matter who I am with. I might respect or disrespect someone depending on who they are, but I never pretend to be what I am not.
>>
>>83528457
What I meant by >>83527950
is that autism is not being over-diagnosed, at least not in a sensible way. But people claiming to be autistic to demand special treatment are pretty common specially in certain internet communities.

>But you also lack the ability to play the game
I know the game, but I want no part of it. To be able to say what I know isn't true, or pretend I like someone when I don't, is the game. I don't want anything to do with that. If I want to lie, I want to lie to gain something specific. I don't want to be liked as a goal in itself just for lying to someone.

>>83528604
Acting differently is not the same as "pretending to be what you're not," though. If one is rowdy and rough with one's friends and gentle and cuddly with their significant other, that doesn't mean they're "pretending" in either case. It's simply a reaction to one's external stimuli as defined by how they perceive themselves in relation to the same. The "self" only really exists in relation to what's outside of itself and we define ourselves in relation to the world around us. The self is malleable and changes all the time; to insist that it's somehow static and never changes at all, to the point where one implies or outright states that others who do so are in someway pretending, is just incorrect.

One man's lie is another's truth. But one man's lie cannot be that SAME man's truth. You know very well what is or isn't a lie according to yourself. Relativity doesn't work on an individual basis.

>But I am not going to change depending on who I am talking to
Except you very likely do, albeit in a much more subtle and probably more honest way than Secretary Clinton. One doesn't really think of themselves as playing the part of anyone other than themselves at any time; normally this is just the outside observer who notices. It doesn't have to have as sudden a shock as the frat brother who becomes the philosopher-poet; often it's a more subtle shift, like the friend who becomes a lover. Have you ever observed a friend around their significant other? That's not necessarily a lie, just another facet of one's self. Same for the philosophizing frat brother. Different scenarios render different results; all are truth.

To bring this back to the board topic: Both Clark Kent and Kal-El are the dominant/true persona. Neither is an act.

Bruce Wayne is an act, but it's a wonderfully overdone act. We know that he's acting, and so does he, so he purposefully goes overboard with it.

New Squirrel Girl is most definitely autistic. It's sad really. They're trying to please these SJWs who have actually started a movement calling for "neurodiversity" where people with mental illnesses are accepted and embraced instead of looking for a cure. They call Autism Speaks and other groups looking for cures "hate groups" calling for genocide of autistic people.

A few years back during the end of Spider-Island, Reed Richards developed a cure for the spider virus via the near-magical antibodies of the Anti-Venom, stripping Eddie Brock of the pseudo-symbiote in the process.

Only, the explanation given was completely bullshit. Due to how antibodies work, he would have only needed a large sample at the most, not the entire thing. So instead of being the usual pseudoscience used in comics, it's a transparent poorly thought out last minute excuse to depower Eddie Brock. Again.

Assuming he's like other heroes, except for the autistic part?

Never talks, socially inept. Comes off as cool because he never talks and just gets the job done, but he doesn't talk often because he knows that the second he does things go downhill pretty fast and that mystique he built up suddenly shatters as its revealed he's an idiot. Occasionally he thinks he trusts someone enough to speak up, but it goes downhill pretty fast regardless. So mainly just goes along with the mysterious costume and persona so he has an excuse to never talk that often.

Very methodical and good at solving mysteries, but if he was ever framed for some villains activities, its unlikely he could clear himself due to sucking at social norms and explaining himself.

I get that this is a joke, but it's a shame how some people actually believe that if X% of the population is GROUP, then at least X% of everything should include GROUP, or some kind of active discrimination is taking place.

Which, you know, is exactly why the NBA is 77% white. Because that's how it works.

Anyhow, an autistic superhero would probably never progress his origin story past finding out he has a fortress of solitude.
