Did you just wake up from a 50 year coma? Racist stereotypes involving blacks and gags like blackface have been censored and removed from mainstream cartoons since the '60s in the U.S. My parents were born in the '50s and even they never saw or heard of the Censored 11 or the pre-'80s Turner edited uncut Tom & Jerry shorts. The only people who probably even remember seeing this shit are in their 70s or older.

Nuts, isn't it? 50 years ago the fight was for inclusion. To be allowed to shop, work, eat, worship, and be educated at the same places, to be treated as equals without a second thought.

Now it seems the narrative has been changed to [insert minority and/or gender here] NEEDS TO BE SECLUDED FROM THE EVIL, RACIST, SLAVE-OWNING WHITES. How fucking fragile do they think these people are? That's not equality.

Who's behind that disguise.
>>
>>83453431
That's like not airing certain episodes of a modern cartoon because there's a black person dressed like a thug in an episode. It was kind of a common sight in those times, wasn't it?
>>
>>83453804
Probably not. Even if whites become a minority, I can't see us not enjoying stereotypes.
>>
>>83453882
That kind of makes sense to me. You can't really do something like >>83452764 when you are showing reruns. Scrolling the text at the bottom of the screen at least doesn't have the same effect and you'd need it going the whole time so that if someone turns it on in the middle of an episode they don't get #triggered.
>>
>>83453804

You really don't see how a "lazy, droopy eyed, big lipped, brain dead coon caricature who is defeated because it is literally impossible for him to avoid a game of dice" might be a bit more loaded than "guy who talks funny"? Especially in the context of the Jim Crowe era South where those exact stereotypical depictions of black people were used to disenfranchise and subjugate them?

The only races to liberals that is 110% of the time underprivileged is blacks and native Americans/abos. Every other race is more or less a white oppressor when libstinks see fit or not. Asians are generally top tier minorities when living out of their home countries, and a decent amount of Asian countries live in first world standards and are doing really well, so they're pretty much always getting shit on because they're "too white" to these racists.

It could be worse. For one of their DVD collections they started every disc with a disclaimer by Whoopi Goldberg. They got enough shit for that that they switched to the text message instead. (They also got shit for releasing some Tom & Jerry cartoons with Mammy's voice redubbed, and had to do replacement discs.)

As for the text disclaimer, it's fine. As long as we get to see the uncut cartoons I don't care what they put in front of them to cover their asses. I just wish they'd found a way to put out the cartoons that were banned from TV in the '60s, like Coal Black and De Sebben Dwarfs (which is a masterpiece).

Even though stereotyping black people fell out of favor in the 1960s, all the way up until the 1980s Germans, and Asians were still heavily stereotyped. I agree with the two original posts/disclaimers by WB.

Being that I'm from a Jewish family, my mother and her second husband get all bent out of shape any time I watch South Park or Family Guy episodes when Jews are featured. I try to convince them that these stereotypes are so over exaggerated, that they were meant to be laughed at by intelligent people who obviously know better, and that Alex Borstein is not only the voice of Lois Griffin, she's one of the main writers for Family Gut, but, being that they're old commies from the 1960s, they refuse to listen to reason, and lecture me on how this is how Hitler came to power, which is not true, since history shows that Hitler didn't have a sense of humor to begin with.

Mammy has been considered un-PC since at least the '60s though.

They've tried redubbing her a few times (in the '60s they made her Irish) but a lot of these cartoons don't have separate music and voice tracks so they're hard to dub.

There's nothing really wrong with her, she's in the TV Tropes category of "fair for its day."

But starting in the '60s everybody got really sensitive about these things, to the point that directors actually wrote to the NAACP asking them if there would be protests over showing black people as servants in a movie about the 1890s (this actually happened).

There's a sense that *any* appearance of a black person in an old movie is a reminder of the racist past. It swallows up a lot of innocent stuff.
>>
>>83459282

Yeah. There's lots of offensive shit in cartoonss, but I never felt like Mammy was one of them. She was in charge. She was the boss. She was in a position of power and her being the way she was was never played as some sort of flaw/inferiority.

When she yelled at Jasper/Thomas, you knew he was in trouble.
>>
>>83459096
But nearly everything has been covered, and it's not like cartoons regularly mock the few possible social trends left (like, say, polygamy). I really don't think anything we produce today in cartoons will be seen as badly in the future as fucking sambo and mammy caricatures are today.
>>
>>83459377

It's really dumb. I think the modern 'white-washed' Mammy voice is even more offensive than the old one.
>>
>>83452764
And stuff like this is why I respect Warner
>>
>>83459282
Mammy was a character common in minstrel shows, just like Sambo, so it became a symbol of oppression for many blacks by the time of the civil rights movement.

If anything, we'll probably move forward to the point where it's not that offensive to black people in the future.
>>

>>
>>83459504
I also think the name "Mammy" gives her a bad rap even though that name is (I think?) never actually used in the cartoons.

It's like the DUMBO crows aren't really very racist but the internet has publicized the fact that one of the crows is named "Jim Crow," which you wouldn't know from watching the movie.
>>
>>83459539
Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips was not one of the "Censored 11." It didn't get banned from TV until the new round of political correctness that started in the '80s.

A lot of black stereotypes were shamed out of U.S. pop culture much earlier than other stereotypes, so you would still get Mickey Rooney as a Japanese guy in 1961, a time when no studio would have dared to paint his face black and make him a black guy. Stereotype Lag, I guess.

I don't know how to describe it, but yeah a lot of these kids wouldn't know they're racist because they lack the context to see them as racist. Most kids wouldn't know to link Mammy or the crows as commentaries or stereotypes of black people because they have no knowledge of said stereotypes.

Exactly. It reminds me of a recent news story where a local newscaster described Lady Ga Ga's music as "jigaboo music". She was a millennial and had no idea jigaboo was a racial slur because it's fallen out of usage. She just thought it was a word she made up on the spot. Needless to say a lot of black people raised hell about it anyway.
>>
Hell no. Who the fuck cares? They're cartoons.

Yeah, it doesn't exactly work well as anti-Japanese propaganda anymore when the war's been over for decades.
Make any person watch it now and they'll think it's ridiculous and racist, not realizing the point was to make US citizens hate Japan and make them buy war bonds.
>>
OP, why the hell is racist in quotations? Alot of those cartoons were pretty blatant in their racism.

It has to be posted again. WB will not censor their old racist shorts because they will not lie about history. It happened, that was a period of US history. WB doesn't condone it any more.

I know for a fact that Cartoon Network used to air those along with other Tom and Jerry shorts back in the early 2000's. Pretty sure I have a VHS recording of Mouse Cleaning somewhere.

Mouse Cleaning is a short about Tom having to keep the house clean while the maid owner is out running errands. The only thing in that cartoon that anyone could find offensive is a brief gag near the end where Tom looks like a black man after having a mountain of coal dumped on top of him.

Other Tom and Jerrys with similar gags were left intact on the first blu-ray set. What the fuck was WB's damage with that particular short? Seriously.

The version I've seen on CN (before they nuked all the Mammy Two-Shoes shorts) deleted the part where Tom goes "No, m'am...I ain't seen no cat, no place, no how..." like Stephen Fechit.

>>83458931
I never complained it was a "trigger warning" I complained it was needless patronizing editorializing regarding creative works that might as well have been created in ancient Greece for all the connection they have to anyone currently working at WB. My understanding is that this plays before cartoons on DVDs you've bought to watch yourself (presumably), it's not like it's a broadcast warning or anything

>>83461759
Again, it's not a broadcast warning, I don't have anything against broadcast warnings. Honestly, even on a DVD that's the only way most of this material can be legally viewed if it was just ass-covering "this content contains racial stereotypes that may be offensive to some viewers" boilerplate I wouldn't even really mind it, but it's not, it's "not only are we not evil racists, we're heroes for not engaging in censorship. Also don't worry, we're not some nutty libertarian free speech absolutists, we have good, liberal reasons for not censoring this because obviously not censoring is something that demands explanation - we're trying to show how wrong racism was." I'd even accept that if it was written by the 95 year old animator or whatever but it's from some corporate flunky who doesn't need to justify any of this because they didn't make it and it implies a level of ownership over it that I find distasteful; what these dorks think about some nearly 80 year old cartoons should be completely irrelevant to whether or not they are available to the public
>>
>>83457088

I'm pretty sure we had a VHS of that, but I never watched it
>>

There is no "L" or "R" in the Japanese the closest they have a consonant that sounds like "RL". No "V" either, with "B" being the closest thing.

This is why in Japanese <-> English translations, B's and V's and L's and R's often get swapped.

Just like how English speakers sound funny when they speak a language that has sounds that don't regularly occur in the english language, like glottal stops, the German "ch", or the aforementioned "RL" sound in Japanese.

Bob Clampett on "Coal Black"

>In 1942, during the height of anti-Japanese sentiment during World War II, I was approached in Hollywood by the cast of an all-black musical off-broadway production called "Jump For Joy" while they were doing some special performances in Los Angeles. They asked me why there weren't any Warner's cartoons with black characters and I didn't have any good answer for that question. So we sat down together and came up with a parody of Disney's "Snow White" and "Coal Black" was the result. They did all the voices for that cartoon, even though Mel Blanc's contract with Warners gave him sole voice credit for all Warners cartoons by then. There was nothing racist or disrespectful toward blacks intended in that film at all, nor in "Tin Pan Alley Cats" which is just a parody of jazz piano great Fats Waller, who was always hamming into the camera during his musical films. Everybody, including blacks had a good time when these cartoons first came out. All the controversy about these two cartoons has developed in later years merely because of changing attitudes toward black civil rights that have happened since then.
