I've been playing for over 2 years, and I've never felt like I 'needed' to spend money (though I have on occasion, to unlock characters faster). Everything comes eventually, with time and/or grinding. It's a game that gives back what you're willing to put into it.
War Machine has 21 Gun Salute as a move in MAA too.

I say 'apparently' mostly because I didn't actually read the comic, just heard about it second-hand on /co/, but also because of the amount of fake-outs and twists that comics often use in their storytelling that make 'death' a very temporary or questionable state.
