Oh, my god, this episode is fucking amazing. Just putting some spotlight on a character who isn't Arnold or Helga is pretty good, but this one takes this character way beyond the stereotype she otherwise embodies and gives her a believable dark side that isn't resolved away in 11 minutes.

Feel free to gush about the best parts of Hey Arnold ITT.
>>
I think Ruth and Arnold shouldve ended up together but the creators had to suddenly make her the ditzy type so Arnold wouldn't go after her anymore.

>>
>>83433116
I'm pretty she wasn't ditzy, she was just older than Arnold so of course it wouldn't have worked out at their age.
>>
>>83433224
Despite Arnold's memory of her giving up her seat for some old lady on the bus or something, she was shallow. They had nothing in common and I think she flirted with the waiter over breadsticks.

Also, Phoebe was always my favorite character. The kid who's always on the sidelines, accepting of her place in the world, but still wanting more.

In every episode except the valentine's day she showed some level of mystique or interest in arnold. I just feel like it was a copout to have her be shallow just so they can get rid of her character

I like the later seasons better. The artstyle got much better.

But season 1 has some good shit, like the christmas episode. Man, to think a Nickelodeon show once showed the vietnam war and its effects on common folk. I dont think any kids show was so down to earth and realistic as HA.
>>

Or was it just Arnold's child crush romantizing her actions of just being nice to the cute 3rd grader.

the character of ruth is about idolising a girl from afar when you really no nothing about. Constantly putting her a pedestal.

Then when you actually get to know her you find out that you have nothing in common with her and anything you though what special about her was all in your head.

Have you not done this before?

My favorite episode with Phoebe was when she won the contest to hang out with her favorite, shallow pop musician and he turned out to be the fakest fraud and she was distraught that he wasn't who she envisioned him to be. It really showed that she was a regular person capable of being wrong and not a stereotype.

episodes like that are always interesting. smart kids arent smart because theyre smart, but because theyre good at patterns. they get in the PATTERN of getting good grades.. and disrupting that pattern can be devastating. your goal isn't learning (you probably arent learning shit you didnt know already), it's maintaining the pattern.. so you almost cheat without thinking

I watched Hey Arnold a lot as a kid and I really loved it. I didn't watch it much as a teen or early adult but at 26 I watched a couple of episodes and went back and watched everything again because of how great it was. It's very bittersweet.

I think the episode that best embodies the way Hey Arnold works is the episode where Grandpa Phil plays Robbie Fischer in Chinese Checkers, and by any standard TV show trope you'd expect lovable old Grandpa to win.

Nope, he was one step away from losing but managed to swing it to a draw. And everybody was super happy because Grandpa didn't lose. He didn't win, but he didn't lose - and that's a really important lesson to teach kids that kids shows almost never teach.

I'm sure a lot of people watching that episode wanted Grandpa to win, too, and were disappointed that he didn't, but then thought "Eh, at least he didn't lose".

Or like how in the Christmas special with mister Nguyen, how Arnold tried everything to help him and just couldn't do it. It took HELGA giving up her favorite shoes to make it work. So in the end, Helga, the person who made the right choice to sacrifice something to make somebody else happy and by every TV Trope should have been rewarded, wasn't given some last-minute super gift or anything. She did the right thing, and that made her lose her present. Very rare for a kids show to show a true sacrifice.

Everything about this show is amazing.

>>
>>83436645
No Hyuhn was from Korea, the whole Christmas episode thing was about him not being able to leave the country because of a war. They never explicitly call it Korea, but it was an obvious Korean war reference.

Or is the name Hyuhn Vietnamese and thats the joke?
>>
>>83436809
He's Vietnamese, dude. Him giving his daughter to the soldiers in the helicopter is a specific reference to the Fall of Saigon.
>>
>>83436809
i guess it's just that when you see a korean war reference in the 90s you just assume it's actually a vietnam war reference. everyone in comics was retconned because it was basically a sequel war, and it allowed everyone to be 20 years younger.
a korean war baby would have been too old. though.. hey arnold does exist in a weird timeless state

Hey guys, OP here. Confession time.

Ive actually been trying to make a nice HA thread for a while now, but those never really take off, for whatever reason. The OP for this thread is actually an exact copy of a thread from 2013, I wanted to see what are the conditions for a thread to take off, but now that it has kinda delivered, I want to get something off my chest.

You see, I rewatched HA for the first time since it aired a couple of months ago, and the show just completely resonated with me. That aspect of childhood that I dearly miss was represented on the screen in quite the realistic fashion, with a realistic setting but more importandely realistic characters. Hey rnold features some of the most human characters in a kids show ive ever seen, and particularly Helga hits very close to home.

Helga may have had a troubled childhood and a disfunctional family, but a lot of her unhappiness is completely her own fault. I feel that, throughtout my life, Ive commited the same mistakes Helga did. I missed a lot of opportunities because of my attittude, and I look back at those with regret. You can imagine what I felt when I decided to feed my nostalgia a little by rewatching a sho from my childhood, and then seeing basically myself and my mistakes.

The lack of proper closure for Hega and the series honestely breaks my heart, because I feel that I might be able to move on once I get it. I might be able to accept that my adult life can be as fulfilling as my childhood, but I need closure. I need to see how Helga ends up. The heavens may have answered my prayers with the confirmation of the Jungle movie, and right now theres really nothing I look foward to more than that.

I havent realy told anyone this, not even my therapist. Im embarassed to talk about how a kids cartoon had such a powerful effect on me, but I feel that I can get this off my chest. Of all people, I imagine /co/ would understand my passion, so thank you for hearing me out, and have a nice day.

The Jolly Ollie Man episode. It's depressing because of how realistic it is. I lived in the homeless shelter for a while when I was between apartments, and it's a pretty accurate portrayal of people who end up there. They're awful human beings who don't want to stop doing stupid shit, then can't figure out why their lives are so terrible.
>>

This episode got me through a fair few work days. I had a really repetitive job that didn't allow listening to music so I would just sing the whole episode to myself to pass the time.

I think the one episode that made me really take a moment to realise how great HA was, was "phoebe Skips"

That one episode was fucking brutal; Phoebe and Helga breaking up was sad enough, but watching Phoebe get eaten alive by the other kids was a whole different kettle of fish, just watching her get used and becoming more and more miserable was heartbreaking. Simultaneously we saw Helga realising that in fact, everybody hates her and nobody wants to trust her.

And then by the end they both end up crying on each others' shoulders and realise they desperately need each other and it's beautiful.

Your interpretation is a little too dramatic IMO. Its not like the other kids hate Helga, its just that they arent willing to endure her bullshit like Phoebe, because they dont know Helga as well as Phoebe does. Also, I dont think the point was that they desperately need each other, but that they were being foolish into thinking that they could just as well do without one another, or that they could be replaced.

That was season 1, when they were still finding their footing. Interestingly, from what I have been told, Craig the creator started out season 1 of Hey Arnold as a bit more of his head in the clouds, above all the struggles and anxieties. Only around midway through season 1 did he start acting more like the Arnold we all know and like.

>a lot of her unhappiness is completely her own fault.

It pains me to agree with you because I freakin' love Helga, but you are sadly right. Her family doesn't help, AT ALL, but yeah, her own psychosis are her own worst enemy. Her dad may be a blowhard workaholic, her mom an ACTUAL alcoholic, and her sister is so wrapped up in her own point of view she can't see Helga as a real person nor anything more than her baby sister. But all those don't directly stop her from confessing her love.

But Arnold has become so important, so integral to her life, that she is too afraid to change things lest she love him. He is, for her, the one stabilizing good point her life. The rest is too hard for her to handle.

Okay, maybe not completely her own fault. But her situation illustrates how you need to have friends and family to help you learn to deal with yourself and deal with problems. If left alone with no one to talk to, it is very very difficult to grow and overcome your own mind.

And friend, there's nothing wrong with finding deeper meaning in ANYTHING, let alone a kids cartoon. Firstly, Hey Arnold! is probably a masterpiece of animation and story telling. It IS trying to teach life lessons while being entertaining. I remember when I learned from a moment in another cartoon when was 22 about the importance of being thankful, instead of bitter and unhappy.

>forbidden /ss/ love

TWO fucking years for crying out loud!
Considering that they had to remove an actual pedo character, this one is rather tame.
The problem also is, that cartoons have always the difficulties of depicting "children" way more mature than they actually are.
Arnold is probably one of the worst offenders in the history of /co/, as even the adults came to him to ask for advice.

The academic push is the only similarity.

Where Olga is demonstrably touchy-feely, Phoebe is downright taciturn by comparison. Whether it's due to her Japanese heritage or just her own personality quirk, Phoebe very rarely lets her emotions show, let alone rule her actions.

This is why the consequences of "Pre-Teen Scream" are so mortifying to her - she actually acted like a preteen girl and was utterly humiliated by it. "Phoebe Skips" also shows she's vulnerable to peer pressure and gets taken advantage of by the 6th-grade girls, also resulting in humiliation.

Phoebe is nothing like Olga.

I liked that Hey Arnold stretched things to increase a coolness factor. Like there's very little possibility that a 9 year in the 90's would have a room as awesome as Arnold's with their own computer and Internet connection, sound system, controllable lighting system, roof access, music collection and video editing software, but it was fun to imagine yourself with those things. Clarence is far more realistic and relatable, which is good in its own way too, but it's not as cool a show.

That's usually the case for the parents of orphan MCs, mostly because when the MC learns about them he only gets to hear about how awesome they were and how sad it is that they are dead.

>>
>>83465316
But it still doesnt invalidate that they both are really bad at coping with the fact that they werent perfect or the best in class. Whats different about them is the reason why:

Phoebe is prideful of her grades, and she wants to be the best.

Olga, though, was trained to be the best. Her parents basically made it so being the best was an integral part of Olgas identity, and whenever she fails to reach these standards, she has a serious mental breakown. To Olga, being perfect isnt a matter of pride, but the bare minimum.
>>
>>83475029
Remember Phoebe's surprise at being bested by Sheena. This pushes her to cheat to maintain her status as the best - it's part of her identity.

Olga, however, sinks into a melodramatic depression when she believes she has made her first B. No scheming, no mad plans to remove the blemishing grade from her records. She just shuts down.

That's what separates her from Phoebe. Olga accepts her fate, if somewhat histrionically. Phoebe actually is willing to change her fate. Remember that we also see this in "Hall Monitor" - she will act outside her projected behavior pattern to maintain control over her surroundings if pushed. (Even Helga's fantasy world in "Married" shows that she recognizes Phoebe doesn't tolerate deviation from her plans.)

>>
It's been awhile since I've seen the show but did the show keep the character development?

Like Rhonda becoming a better person after befriending Patty. I thought the episode was great one of my favorites really. But I can't remember if she actually stayed being a better person
>>
>>83473515
Nice try, my friend told me it was lasy animators.
Same thing can be said for the 80's Transformers G1.

>Why AIN'T there more R34 of them together.
>>
>>83476125
I know that Harold became less of a bully.
>>
>>83476125
The show did have a lot of repetitive character development.

Rhonda usually goes back to being a rich smug cunt in the episodes focused on her then learns back her lesson, just like Oskar going back to being a lazy sleazebag or that singer becoming a dick again. The episodes that didn't focus on her though had her being on good terms with everybody else in school.

>>83476440
That was more of him originally being conceived as the bully character (eventually the 5th graders took the role) while Harold became the fat friend/token jew.
>>
>>83475839
Well, I still think that Olga's drive to be the best is obviously a function of her showmanship, while Phoebe's is much more internalized. Anyone giving them something beyond a passing glance would pick this up immediately. Olga would be seen as a flashy showoff, while Phoebe would be seen as just another diligent Asian overachiever.

Remember how Olga brags about the grades on her latest report card while Phoebe quietly expects her next top grade on the latest assignment? They both come from pride, but one is flaunted by its recipient while the other one is downplayed.

Also remember the reactions to less-than-best grades: one is consolation for a perceived loss while the other is teasing for slipping performance. Even if both are expected to be the best, the responses to each shows that each audience understands the underlying motivations and adjusts their response accordingly.
>>
>>83476920
The difference everyone misses is that Olga knew she earned that A+. She knew she worked her ass off and she knew she aced every assignment in that class. So how's she supposed to take her grade? That despite working as hard as she could have and doing everything expected of her it wasn't good enough and she has no idea what she could have done wrong because she knows she went above and beyond what was expected of her.

And yet there's that grade. It's probably the cruelest thing Helga has ever done.
>>
>>83476697
Rhonda has mellowed out a bit over time. The times she has to learn to be more tolerant have gone from generalized (cool vs. geek) to more specific (Patty, Curly), and each time she learns a bit more.

Is she perfect? No don't expect her to be yet - she's nine. Is she improving , though? Yes, she is.

As for Oskar? I'm still surprised that an unemployed illiterate leech like him bagged such a cutie as Suzie. I don't think he'll ever change his ways completely.

(I have this fantasy that Suzie finds out the preacher who did their wedding turns out to be fake. When the judge presiding over the annulment finds out the immigrant Oskar is not in the country legally due to this, he gives Suzie the chance to marry him for real to keep him here - and she says no.)

Harold mellows out with good influences (Arnold, Patty, Marty Green). He'll be okay as soon as he moves away from his enabling mom.
>>
>>83477086
Graded on a curve. perhaps? Or maybe she just never questions authority.

And, yes, it was evil on Helga's part, because she knew this would happen - yet even she succumbed to her conscience eventually. She's not as evil as she thought (and Olga still forgives her, because she knows that even though Helga isn't a slave to performance like she is, she still gets short shrift in other ways).
>>
>>83476920
Eh, maybe you're right. But there's definitely something very amiss in Olga's character for her to have such a breakdown. That reaction of hers wasn't due to her dissapointing her parents, but due to her head just not computing how she could have been less than perfect. It's clear that the idea of her being the best is deeply rooted in her character, and she cannot function if she fails.

Phoebes reaction is much more due to her own vanity.
>>
>>83477412
In all likelihood she would have believed she would have had to have bombed the final and that's how she got her grade.
>>
>>83477287
I think Suzie eventually left him, at some point later in the series the only tennants in the house were Hyunh, Oskar and Ernie while Suzie was nowhere to be seen.
>>
>>83477575
I can agree with both of your conclusions here.

>>83477621
It really wouldn't have mattered how it happened. The incongruity of a non-A grade on her report card just made her brain BSOD.

>>83477646
