It needs to be Darker and Grittier and Superman can't save anyone because that's not Dark and Gritty. Audiences don't want to see Superman save anyone, they want to learn about all the cool moments in the trailer, so then they can watch the movie and go "That was in the trailer!"

No, dipshit, the editor (correctly) viewed those scenes as the least important, the things that could be cut without having the movie make even less sense.
The movie after heavy editing was fucking 180 minutes.
Stop trying to pretend there's a reason the movie was bad beyond a shit script and a director who was wrong for the property. It wasn't fucked by DC execs, it wasn't butchered in the editing room, it was a shitty production from start to finish.

A movie whose story fits nicely into two and a half hours is also extremely different from a bloated mess that couldn't be cut below two and a half hours.
