I think it's kind of clever that it was a future villain who did it, but giving him a generic "dead parent" origin isn't really any better to make him motivation if that's the goal.
Kind of felt like Blitz retread and maybe Johns would have had him save his mom for real in the end if the run had panned out. The amount of influence that Mirror Master's mirror had on Barry's mindset at the time of Flashpoint got kind of swept under the rug at least.
