>>
getting a woman to write a character like this was a mistake
>>
>>83385458
What else has she written?
>>
>>83385458
Jo Duffy did great, Cloonan's just a bad fit.
>>
So what exactly is going wrong so far? I think it has been decent, although I'm wondering about the bit where Frank shoots two cops. Overall it's no more bizarre than the older tales or even our Lord and Savior Ennis's Marvel knights.
>>
>>83385491
Gotham Academy.

The announcemen she was writing this lead to a lot of Schoolgirl Frank jokes.
>>
>>83385727
Poor fit for the character, worst and most strawman villains ever, 0/10 dialogue.

Those seem to be the general issues that most people have with this run so far.
>>
>>83385832
Can you explain the first? I get the latter two, although Face may be an interesting Psychopath.
>>
>>83385491
Gotham Academy, Southern Cross, a bunch of mini comics.

Her mini comics are the best thing she's ever done but they are all about horror and romance.
>>
>>83385898
It doesn't seem like a Punisher story. It's like some shit that a typical darker hero or antihero would go against, but not a "mafia killer" type like the Punisher.

People tend to get that while Ennis pushed the "broken man" treatment of the character more than any writer before him (except for maybe Bill Mantlo lol), the types of stories that he wrote with the character were basically par for the course in the 80s and 90s. Read Chuck Dixon's run in particular and tell me those don't seem like a toned down version of Ennis' work.

This is just kind of a Marvel comic with a little more edginess.
>>
>>83386175
So far It seems a standard story for Frank especially now with our paramilitary group. The only bizarre element here is arguably the super drugs, something Frank has dealt with before. So far it's mediocre , however I don't just see the major deal breaker.
>>
>>83385832

>most strawman villains ever

What?
>>
>>83385279
That man's going to get Franked like no tommorow.
>>
I don't really get the massive hate over this. I mean it's not that good. I'd even say it's mediocre, but it's not terrible.
>>
>>83385727
Pretty sure the cops were corrupt
>>
I don't understand comics as well as you guys, but this doesn't feel right.

They spend 4 pages on nothing but buying guns, and not even interesting ones.

He shoots the cops and two dealers, then forgets completely about the guy in the hat?

That fight with the coked up dude jumping around feels more like it's from some kind of Bleach like anime.

He just bought every weapon in counter strike at the start of the issue, but he only shows up with a pistol?

When I think of the punisher, I think of evil fuckheads working their asses off to be interestingly evil, and I think of the punisher punishing the fuck out of them, preferably in somewhat creative ways.

The guys who get shot here feel generic, although things might be looking up with the easy bake suicide bomber there.
>>
>>83387079
Frank generally avoids shooting even corrupt cops, even Ennis didn't have pull the trigger on one in Slavers, and it was a huge plot point in Aaron's Max. For the older stuff I don't recall Frank ever pulling the trigger on due to the repercussions of such an action.
>>
>>83387205
Decompression man, and poor storytelling. Dixon had super coke once, and wrapped it up in one issue. The issue was admittedly mediocre.
>>
>>83387205
>He just bought every weapon in counter strike

You nailed it right there. This writer ADMITTED that they "know nothing about guns except what they learned from Halo". They just picked a writer who has NO idea what the fuck they're doing and is completely out of their element and lacks any knowledge or experience or writing skills to be able to write The Punisher.
>>
>>83387079
Punisher makes it an absolute rule to never kill cops under any circumstances. From a storytelling perspective this is 100% necessary because otherwise there's no way to rationalize why the cops keep ignoring him.
>>
>>83387737
Having a noguns write the punisher is like having Willis make porn.
>>
>>83387737
>This writer ADMITTED that they "know nothing about guns except what they learned from Halo".

You have to be kidding? Research is am integral part of writing, in the age of the Internet gun research is relatively easy even without shooting the damn thing. Even the guys behind Golgo 13 in Japan of all places do guns right.

This is clever. The large splats are the exit wounds.
I forgot.

>>83384990
And the only real flaw in this.
Frank has good understanding that this is his WAR ON CRIME, not a sting.
If somebodies goes high on glass, to the point where they need to be killed or broken to stop, he understands the need to kill them before they run off.
The girl suicide bomber don't need the guy to survive to even be a set up.
>>
>>83387607

>Dixon had super coke once, and wrapped it up in one issue.

Three.
>>
>>83387557

>For the older stuff I don't recall Frank ever pulling the trigger on due to the repercussions of such an action.

I'm pretty sure he did if they were especially bad, like murderers or something.
>>
>>83387205
Its called shitty writing. A punisher comic should fetishize the gun this its just there, they don't even use it half the time.
>>
Really meh. Not particularly bad, not particularly good either.

I was interested by the initial premise that Frank was suppossed to be presented as some sort of slasher killer for villains. But for that you need to come up with interesting villains in the first place. Two issues in and there are none.

Probably still above average compared to the current Marvel books, definitely below compared to most other Punisher books, even exclusively 616 Frank.
>>
>>83384956

>panel 5

I hate this art but damn if that isn't kinda spooky
>>
>>83388257
Which were they? I recall one in which he got his Frank armor back and shot an innocent man, or maybe I'm getting them mixed up.
>>
>>83386459

Agreed. It's not irredeemably shit, but it does feel like someone took a warmed-over MAX plot idea, took out the swearing and handed it off to Dillon.

Not as well written, but not THAT much different from Ennis's initial Marvel Knights stuff. I think you guys are being a bit over the top with the hate. It's better than Edmondson at least.
>>
>>83389015
False on both accounts. Ennis' Marvel Knights was a black comedy. This actually thinks it's 100% serious. Even Edmonson's run was better.

This is easily the third worst Punisher run after fagtion and the clusterfuck that was late 90s Punisher.
>>
Huh, Dillon's art looks pretty good for once.

Edmonson at least had good art to back up his less than stellar writing. Also Edmonson had characters, this feels like a plot outline sent to Dillon without any additional effort

Diner is not running it, they're just a middleman keeping track of communication, so noone knows too much at the time - same principle as with intelligence agencies, spies never know anyone aside from people they recruited and their handler so they can't spill any beans. Here, instead of using a contact box, which is cliched and really dangerous if you are being staked out, they use a diner for the same purpose.

I mean, think about it - if cops or ATF are trying to track your moves - they will trace your phone, GPS your car, bug your phone - but surely they won't pay attention to your short stop at a roadside diner - and they probably won't have idea to track a call from a local payphone. Even if they are staking out your every move, asking for a menu item is not really suspicious and can be done in an inconspicuous way - I'm assuming if anyone else would be in the diner, waitress would ask Frank to make another order, and then put down the phone number and instructions on the check - and Frank would probably be expected to make a call from a payphone in a nearby town instead of the one in the diner - but since they are alone, she doesn't need to beat around the bush.

This is also why the delivery is made via stay in a motel room - because stay in a motel is something people do all the time, and if you come with a suitcase (empty) and come out with a suitcase (full) noone will be the wiser - and guns will 'materialise" out of thin air.

But of course, I'm talking for nothing. /co/ hivemind has already decided this is a Bad Writer, ergo everything he does is bad, regardless of what it is.

I mean, I'm not saying that "a new drug that turns regular schmucks into superpowerede psychokillers" isn't a kind of a cliched plot, but then again, so are most plots, question is what the writer does with this from now on.
It wasn't amazing, but it wasn't terrible either. I appreciate slightly more realistic/grounded tone (which the superdrugs kind of destroy, sadly)
>>
>>83389852
I mean, it's not a bad plan, especially if they are going to be at least smart enough to have a dead man's switch (i.e. when he stops holding the button, bomb goes off).

... Well, in reality this can actually be circumvented by precisely shooting at medulla oblongata which causes an involuntary contraction of fingers that persists after death, which is something that Frank would be capable of.

So it's not a foolproof plan, but better than most thugs that go against Frank.

Also after writing this I just realized that a scene where diner IS full, would've made for a better scene, probably.

>panel 1: establishing shot: outside of a diner with a flat roof and a neon sign on top of the roof - frame the shot so that we can see bottom of the diner's advertising sign on the roof and the inside of it, and so that we can only see bottom of the letters, but astute readers should be able to dedude it says "Lou's Diner"; roof should be at eye level, so being flat, it would appear to be a straight line. Below the roof, we can see inside of the diner through the glass - it's a standard American roadside diner, I doubt it'd be hard to find references for it.
>Frank is seated inside, next to a window, so we can see him clearly - and behind his booth we can see the counter and waitress - so readers will have general sense of where things are within this diner, allowing some crazier camera angles. There are some other patrons aside from Frank inside - mostly appears to be some hicks and truckers.
>2: Waitress: What can I do you for?
>3: Frank: Smoked meat sandwich.
>4: Waitress: Come again?
>5: Frank: I heard you make good smoked meat sandwiches.
>6: Waitress: Sir, we don't serve any sandwiches in here. Any other order?
>7: Frank: Just coffee.
>-- page break---

>1: Frank: Check please.
>panel 2: Frank takes the check and leaves
>next, row of three similar panels:
>panel 3: Frank looks around
>panel 4: identical to above, but show Frank moving his eyes over a check he holds in his hands, almost as if by accident
>panel 5: we see Frank clearly looking down at the check and reading it.
>panel 6: closeup at the check.

The reason he's willing to have her go Allahu Akbar is because this nigger got cucked!

Even if the writer knows jack shit about guns, they could still move things towards whatever kind of combat or action they DO know. Like that one where hes' in the ocean fucking with some drug dealers.

>I was interested by the initial premise that Frank was suppossed to be presented as some sort of slasher killer for villains.

Actually that's a potentially hilarious setup. Imagine an evil archie, stereotypical horror movie protagonist group that stumbles on to a big pile of drugs or superweapons or whatever, or stumbles on to one of Frank's caches, and decides to sell all the guns, and frank comes in and franks the fuck out of them one by one, like a horror movie slasher.

POV is of the shitty, scared criminals.

The second, though most of that series (as well as the MAX Annual) had Frank as a figure stalking in the background.

Are loli-bombs Frank's one true weakness?
