I think veggietales had the right idea, like toystory.
Focusing on animating toys or vegetables are both rather shiny and plastic looking, so it's easier to get away with in primitive animation.
I remember my brother some how got a copy of this when we were younger. I was still in high school at the time. I came home and saw the DVD laying around the house and asked my mom about it since I thought it was cute that my brother watched cartoons since I love him more than anything in the world. Apparently the scene where the other donkeys punked Ollie around made my brother upset. Made him sad. I hate this stupid ass donkey because of that. I remember watching a bit with him, avoiding that scene. It was absolute shit.
