If he was CIA at all, he was probably working a desk job. You still get sent to other countries for short postings, you can still see some shit (albeit second hand), but you're not a field agent and you never will be. Most CIA employees work as analysts (excluding people like janitorial and so on, who are more likely to be contractors anyway and so not technically employees). They do very boring work which mostly relates to specific areas or fields, and may, if they're talented and there's a need, deal specifically with perhaps a few hundred cases over their careers. It's simpler and more accurate than programming a computer to act as an archive and flag up suspicious activity (for now).
What he wasn't was a CIA field agent because what are you fucking dense, do you really imagine anybody who does that kind of shit talks about it publicly? Field agents are often known by their opposite numbers, but there's no way to verify that. So either he's the biggest fucking dickhead in the world and decided to tell people who he has made enemies of who he was all along, or he's talking himself up because it gets him free drinks at the bar. The CIA does not confirm or deny having employed any person without a federal order, and even then they'll resist doing so. If you're a big-mouthed liar it's the perfect legend, because the only people who can tell whether you were or weren't would be your contemporaries who actually did work in signals, and they're not fucking idiots. They're also not people you want to make yourself a person of interest to, because some of them - the ones with media profiles - will eventually out you. Look at what happened to Wayne Simmons.
