In the original Carla Mary sequence (image provided by a helpful anon from the last thread), Mary tries 5 things before she resorts to bigotry. She asks her to stop in a not overly rude manner, she states that Carla is breaking the rules, she physically impedes her while reading, she uses glue on Carla's skates, mentions the rules 2 more times, and then asks her to stop. Then after all that has failed she pulls out some bigotry. It's important to note that after she glues Carla's skates, she doesn't gloat, or call her names or even interact with her, she just goes back to studying.
I'm black and I've interacted with people who I wouldn't even consider racists who still went to racial slurs/insults as soon as there was any dissent. That's kind of how bigotry works, it's always at the forefront, it's not the secret weapon you pull out as a sixth resort. So not only did Willis write Mary as way more reasonable than she normally is (she went back to calling everyone degenerates and freaks at every moment afterwards), he also failed to capture how a bigot acts.
No wonder everyone was confused at the time of the boys' dorm comment, and no wonder people keep going back to the idea that Mary primarily wanted to study: it's literally how Mary was presented.
The thing that bothers me the most is other girls in the dorm besides Mary SHOULD have a problem with Carla.

Every once in a while, someone posts pointing out that Willis is milking Patreon. But here's a fun fact: even if he's making $70k/year (which is iffy), there's almost no way his standard of living is as high as mine in QA Hell for a mid-level company.

She'd have to explain why in particular she designed the device to strike Mary at a certain height and orchestrate this over weeks. She'd have to explain why something designed, likely under a Federal or private contract, was suddenly converted for personal harassment. If Mary so much as whispers this to the shareholders of Ruttech R&D or some of their licensees, things may suddenly become VERY unpleasant for Carla.

This is a bigger problem than you'd think. Engineering students are expected to take an ethics course for experimental design centering around precisely this. You're firing an "experimental" anything before it's been vetted by UL or the FCC and suddenly things become VERY tricky. ESPECIALLY if you're involving anyone not in the program or who couldn't REASONABLY know not to look directly into the beam.
