They did, however in the new one they are, at least in the beginning matching the colors of the uniforms to their lions. The original Lance/Isamu back in '84 wore the blue uniform but piloted red lion.
Sven/Shirogane wore the black uniform and piloted blue lion and was injured/killed in episode 6 and was replaced by the Princess.
The new black one is the leader, Shiro.

1) The actress was what they were looking for to begin with and what they want to go forward with.

Its more complicated than that. You run into the problem if it being completely unrecognizable if you change too much, which will make it look like you're banking on name recognition to tell a story you had no confidence in selling on its own.
Look at the Robocop reboot for a perfect example of that.
With this, we have enough of a familar foundation to build on to better stories and directions the original show didn't take. Shiro already gives me the impression he might be a unwilling mole after reading his bio or even Zoltan in disguise while the real Shiro still imprisoned.

The thing is the changes done to the Robocop reboot weren't well received. But change does NOT always equal bad. For instance the MCU has some fairly deep divergences from the source material in a number of different ways but the changes have largely been appreciated (though not always, such as with Ultron). Also appreciation or revulsion isn't universal. Opinions can vary wildly.
Now you may say that the MCU is just an adaptation in a different media, but whatever part that may have played again there is nothing wrong with a retelling or re-imagining if done correctly. Just as adaptations to different medias aren't always well received. Nolan Bats was appreciated, so far the new DCU is suffering badly.
You can also have different opinions between the fans of original hating something new who might be a vocal minority if the "damn dirty casuals" who never watched the original like the new version. You get some of that with the comic adaptations, after all, when they don't follow the source material and yet people love it. It's not anything to do with the merit of the changes, it's those filthy casuals to blame for making something popular. Always amusing when the people who decry the casuals themselves often complain about whatever writer is ruining their favorite comic character forever.

Keith got his Golion family name to be Keith Kogane (to which Voltron Force semi kept but anglicanized the pronunciation).
Lance's full name became Lance Charles McClaine
Pidge's name was a nickname (like how he was called Chibi in Golion) so his 'real' name became Daryl Stoker.
Hunk's name was also a nickname and his 'real' name was Tsuyoshi Garret, his first name taken from the original Golion pilot.
Sven's full name became Sven Holgersson.
