Joyce. Ah, yes, Joyce. I have a lot of similarities to Joyce, pre-ruining. Joyce represents his sheltered upbringing and how he finally began to see that there is a lot more to the world than he originally thought there was. His constant references to Joyce being his self-insert come off as condescending because of all the terrible things that have happened to her. Did he almost get raped at his first college party? Probably not. And there is this other aspect that gets commented on but overlooked in the sense of being part of his self-insert: Joyce’s physical interest in other girls. Walky: the original self-insert. I have no idea how he got the nickname in the first place, because I can’t make “Walky” out of “David Willis” for the life of me. In any case, Walky (full name David Walkerton in the comics) is a snot-nosed brat who can do whatever he wants and has spent most of his life succeeding without trying and without noticing the effort other people have to put forth. This comes off to me as him being smug about his supposed intelligence and how he doesn’t have to try for people to like him and his work. Remember that line about how DoA is a comic he can do without any effort?

Part 2:
Dorothy is the lovable atheist and unlikely best friend of Joyce. I think her personality early on is to show Joyce that you don’t have to be a Christian to be a nice person. However, as time has gone on, she has become less pleasant, for some unknown reason. She’s intelligent and ambitious, which I bet is how Willis sees himself. But she has a darker side: she doesn’t really seem to mind using people. It’s not a major trait right now, but she’s gotten somewhat manipulative. And she is *always* right. Hmmm, who does that sound like?
Billie is a bit more difficult to place. She has been an alcoholic since before the comic began, and from what it sounds like, she is heavily bisexual. But it seems to me like her sexuality conforms to whatever storyline he wants to do. This isn’t to say that she isn’t bi—it’s just that every mention of her sexual orientation has implied something different. A holdover from some of the other timelines is a car accident she had because of drunk driving. You can see a lot of hedonism in Billie—she is able to do pretty much whatever she wants and no one will have a problem with it. I think this is wish fulfillment on the part of Willis. Billie can kiss whoever she wants to and can drink however much she wants to, and the consequences in-comic have been pretty minimal, suicide pact aside.

Amber is another character who’s pretty nebulous. As it’s been said on here, her psychological state is dependent upon what the storyline calls for. It’s more like there are 3 or 4 Ambers, not 2. Amazi-Girl is ridiculous and can do nigh-superhuman feats in a world where superpowers (according to Word of God) do not exist. This is a bit of a Christopher Nolan thing, to me at least. In Nolan’s Batman films, Batman (one of Willis’s other favorite things, after Transformers) has it all and lives in a world without superpowers, yet he can miraculously survive horrific injuries and has basically infinite money. Willis uses Amazi-Girl to let out the side of him that wants to be brave. Amber is a girl who sits in her dorm room and plays video games, yet she still has a supernatural capability for surviving injuries that should have killed her. She is heavyset and is a general geek, but she is also Batman. So, here’s some more wish fulfillment.
Poor Danny. He’s basically a weak little puppy that everyone feels compelled to kick all the time. He’s a bit pathetic and generally pretty clueless. But that is in part due to nobody actually *telling* him anything. Everyone but Joe speaks to him in vagaries and expects him to know what’s going on. Danny is discovering his bisexuality, and it is just another mystery in life for him, because nothing else makes sense anyway. He’s a less assertive Joyce, honestly. Joyce is generally confident and happy but gets blind-sided by stuff she’s never even heard of. Danny is miserable AND gets blind-sided. He’s the one-note character that gets verbally abused like Jerry in “Parks and Recreation.” They even say that someone is “Danning” something up—so his name is literally used as a verb for ruining their chances.

How does he not realize this? Having the universe bend to a character's will to get them out of a situation is NOT GOOD WRITING.
It would have been better if Becky had played an active part in her own goddamn story, or contributed to stopping her dad, but no, she sits on her ass and needs to be saved. But somehow this is her victory and she's so brave yay Becky. Then her obnoxious attitude is justified, as always, and boom, she's the new protagonist of the strip.

It's a combination of personality and behavior wish fulfillment, parent issues, and presumably a deal of residual resentment of how long it took him to recognize and break from his upbringing. It's be roughly three weeks since the semester began and Becky has already started a new life, come out, gotten a girlfriend, surrounded by new friends, and has completely cut herself off from her parents.
