It depends on which story you actually read. If you pick a storyline like Psychopath or Yellow Belly, then you'll most likely get nothing but shitty shock value torture porn. But if you read something like the original story by Garth Ennis, the webcomic Wish You Were Here, or one of the Badlands storylines like the Smoky Arc or American Quitters, then you might find a legitimately good story which uses extreme imagery as a backdrop for just how desolate and morbid the situation is for the characters on hand.
