Time for Best Comic

people sure are mad about Cap
>>
>>83161120
How about that anger over Captain America though

If sales truly are proportion to how much anger there is, then how much will it sell?
300,000 for #1, 60k for the rest of it? 200,000, 80k? A billion and a million?
>>
>>83161181
Yeah, "He was just angry" turned out to be a big lie.
>>
here we go
>>
>>83161166
>We want you to change Steve Rogers to a gay man!
>Change Steve Rogers, you say?

I cant believed this is real.

>Marvel is set for another major publishing initiative, this time kicking off this fall following "Civil War II." As teased in the "Civil War II Daily Bugle Newspaper" released today, the publisher will return to the "Marvel NOW!" branding, first used in 2012 in the aftermath of "Avengers vs. X-Men," for its latest crop of new series and new status quos.

>Readers will get a first look at the line in the "Marvel NOW! Previews Magazine," available in stores on July 13. Much like last year's "Marvel Previews" supplement that revealed the post-"Secret Wars" "All-New, All-Different Marvel" lineup, it'll reveal new creative teams and new series for Marvel's lineup going forward after a major event (though "Civil War II" will be relatively early in its run by mid-July).

>"Marvel NOW! is about the future of the Marvel Universe," Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso said in a press release. "We're excited to provide fans with a snapshot of things to come right before San Diego Comic-Con. Fans can look forward to hearing about brand new titles, returning favorites and even some shocking status quo shifts that are sure to keep fans guessing all the way through 'Civil War II.'"

>The "Marvel NOW! Previews Magazine" will be available on July 13. "Civil War II" #1, by Brian Michael Bendis and David Marquez, is on sale next Wednesday, June 1.

Yeah I saw my friends who didn't care about comics talking about the Cap thing.

Even they can guess that it's a temporary thing and most likely a fakeout. Mainstream comics have done such a great job at killing suspense that even people who know next to nothing about it can see through it
>>
>>83161309

are they putting things back to the same status quo?

why
>>
>>83161331
>>AXEL ALONSO: For starters, we’re in the midst of a massive universe transforming event in Secret Wars. This is an event we’ve been building to for some time, and it’s clearing the canvas and putting new and familiar stuff on the canvas in its aftermath. And so it’s transformed the Marvel Universe we’re looking at, which is the perfect opportunity to start a new chapter. And that said, most importantly, I think that the comics industry—certainly, we are—slowly working into a season model that’s not too unlike what we see in our favorite cable TV shows: a seasonal model that offers accessible entry points for new readers and is respectful of long-term fans. We did Marvel NOW! and All-New Marvel NOW!, which were both two very successful campaigns. And this is the latest campaign. The goal is to invite a new audience while maintaining and honoring the fans who are already reading. So this fall, this All-New All-Different Marvel is going to unveil somewhere around 60 titles, all new #1s. And nothing says “jumping point” like the #1. And all of them, I think, all are going to offer diverse, exciting and accessible entry points into our world. And there’ll be a lot of different flavors.

Hello Storyteller.

My my, look who had a cameo in Rebirth.

Is it just me, or does Imra come off a little creepy here?
>>
>>83161409
It's like an all you can eat buffet of saltiness, schadenfreude and pettiness from all corners

I'm in heaven

I'm taking special joy in people complaining that Kyle wasn't on the Rebirth splash
>>
>>83161338
Zemo is Cobra Commander. Blue hood, purple sock, what's the difference.
>>
>>83161309
Civil War 2 must've not gotten the hype they wanted

And they said they're moving to "seasons", like tv. So that means more annual relaunches. Marvel Now, All New, Avengers Now, ANAD, etc

But "Marvel Now"? Is that the best they could come up with?
>>
OP is a funnybook reader

Was TBolts out today or is that next week?
>>
>>83161344
I saw my least favorite argument in the world, which came up with respect to Lois Lane and the Truth storyline as well, that being "It's irresponsible to write this because the worst parts of fandom will use it"
>>
>>83161384
It's kinda funny, really.
>>
>>83161235
This is worse than there being two Flash Rebirths in like 5 years

>>83161475

also WTF I've never felt like that for Johnny Thunder, does "I gave it away" mean Jakeem incoming?

>>83161409
I don't care about Watchmen so seeing people treat it like some sacred thing to not be tainted or associated with something bad it just great for me.

>>83161423
>And nothing says “jumping point” like the #1.
Nothing says "jumping off" like "final issue" and "relaunch".
>>
>>83161451
That's Gary Frank drawing her, isn't it? That's probably why.

That's what makes it so great.

Embrace Superior Steve.

oh, could be! he says he lost it, I think

Gary Frank doesn't do good smiles

But seriously, Kalista's actions, I KNEW IT
>>
>>83161459
I saw someone complaining that Kenan was an obvious Chulk ripoff

And I'm like damn, son, Marvel trademarked Asian people?
>>
>>83161720
oh yes they do
>>
>>83161730
Also ummm he's Mandarin Chinese and not Korean, that's really not the same thing, REALLY.
>>
>>83161730
I guess DC isn't allowed to have asian people who aren't martial artists?
>>
>>83161555
>also WTF I've never felt like that for Johnny Thunder, does "I gave it away" mean Jakeem incoming?
Poor Johnny. I hope it does eventually lead to him and Jakeem teaming up as mentor and student. Rebirth's purported attention to legacies seems to imply it. We've already seen Ted and Jaime.

>>83161574
>>83161576
>>83161607
Oh, yeah, the guy who drew most of Legion of Three Worlds, right? Though to be fair, Imra often gives a bit of a creepy vibe, but it's usually not that overt. Not complaining.

>>83161849
Poor Brubaker

He had to tweet like five or six times that he had nothing to do with it and hasn't worked at marvel for the past ~5 years

>>83161908
The Rebirth pages with young Wally were really affectionate, I dug that. Please write him well, Percy and Williamson. Let him be a character.
>>
>>83161894
Ryan is a uni professor, that's almost as typical.

Counterpoint: Acknowledged in-universe to be hot, that negates all gains.
>>
>>83161908

Dave is busy storytiming Phantom Stranger right now but he has an idea that Jakeem is going to be the great-grandson that they mention.

Speaking of Asian-Americans, why'd they make Ryan so young? GigantaxAtom is dead now. Lame.

I thought they co-owned that with DC.

Jessica already has a small handful of fans

poor Simon ;_;

actually poor both of them, they're going to be defined almost solely by Dogfucker
>>
>>83163497
Also, Spencer's not dumb, he has to know that there's a small but actual Jack Flag fandom out there from DnA GOTG, right? So that's more quality trolling.
>>
>>83162705
I don't understand. Why not just get Captain Atom to level the place? He could do it fast enough that nobody would be able to identify him in order to link him to the US.
>>
>>83163509
They actually co-own that with DC.
>>
>>83163419
Dunno. I think being a Guyfag means loving him getting shit on because we love him and it's hilarious, so it's hard to ever get that mad.
>>
>>83163559
This is pretty early in Captain Atom, and she'd have to go through Eiling to get in touch with him, and she HATES Eiling (it's mutual)
>>
>>83163554
You day that, yet look at what he's doing to Zemo.
>>
>>83163632
I haven't read the issue, so is his Zemo just shitty, or trolling, or what? Quality here meaning 'effective' trolling
>>
>>83163624
Or just seeing Guy get mad an the consequences thereof is an easy reminder not to get mad yourself.
>>
>>83163559
Politics man. You don't want some other shady government group handling a situation yours can
>>
>>83161409
I like Watchmen and am angry about them throwing it into DC proper... but not out of any loyalty to it or Alan "Rapes" Moore. It's more that Watchmen was it's own thing, a fully self contained story. So taking it and grafting it into DC makes no sense to me. They may as well have had Atticus Finch be the architect of the grimdarking of DC.
>>
>>83163670
why can I not post the right pix today?

>>

Atom works for Eiling at this point.
Eiling and Waller fucking hate eachother. Probably because they've got so much in common.
>>
So is Plastique at her gun for hire phase or is there ideological stuff i don't know about french Canadians
>>
>>83163718
Even Alan Moore isn't particularly fond of Watchmen honestly.
He regrets not owning it himself, but he's pointed out before that it is entirely a piece of outdated 80's Nihilism that he worked out of his system as soon as it was done and then to some degree half of comics poorly copied it for over a decade and change.

Basically he wrote the series when he was depressed and angry and it's kinda notable that lot of his other cape works (Supreme and stuff like Tom Strong) are noticeably more idealistic and hopeful.
>>
>>83163763
That's why I love him.
>>
>>83163887

it's also super fucking 80s which no one seems to notice
>>
So, dumb question, but since Harley debuted in the BTAS she's not going to show up at all in this run, right?

No. And I really wanted this book since Johns' run ended. Really enjoyed the arc he did with Simon
>>
>>83163884
I think gun-for-hire.
>>
>>83163718
It's clearly a piece of meta-commentary. Stories like Watchmen and DKR have defined DC for decades, to the point people like Zack Snyder have been influenced by them when it comes to their own interpretations of the DC mythos. So, these stories, especially Watchmen (which influenced far more than just the DCU) had to be brought into the argument so Johns' metacommentary makes sense.

People keep saying that Manhattan is responsible for the reboot but Wally straight up says his influence was around even before Flashpoint. It's obvious what Johns is going for and for that, you need Manhattan, you need to face the reality that is Watchmen.
>>
>>83163967

the one where he puts his fists on a table and shoots a guy in the hands is from his mini right?

fyi DC collected that and those Detective Comics issues in a nice little trade which i didn't know until recently
>>
>>83163884
She is ALMOST at her gun-for-hire phase (that happens right after this if I recall), but Plastique is actually a French-Canadian separatist.
Domestic terrorism was a big fear for a lot of the US and Canada in the 1980's, what with stuff like angry militia groups popping up everything with Reagan stoking the USSR in a game of nuclear chicken just to get it to admit that it was economically collapsing.
>>
>>83163938
This is 80s, she's late 90s. Simple.
>>
>>83163873
Yosemite Sam. There's no difference between this Zemo and the one at the end of Standoff.

I see it get brought up all the time about DKR when people call it "dated" but will then recommend Watchmen

Yes, thank fuck. She only joined the Squad after the reboot.

>>
>>83164021
This is, I think, also Northstar's background. He was briefly a domestic terrorist, same time period, probably same area of motivation.
>>
>>83163925
Nihilism was big in the 80's.
My dad once explained to me why, and the answer basically could be summed up in "we didn't know as much about how the world worked as we thought and we got retarded about it for a whole decade".
>>83164019
Johns is not QUITE as good at meta-commentary as Morrison is (he loves comics too much to just detach himself and objectively notice certain things), but his extremely broad education on comics (so to speak) gives him a pretty good grasp of the context and commentary of a lot of comics stuff.
>>
>>83164099
Has she even appeared anywhere in the last 5+ years, other than Bombshells?
>>
>>83164099
Go away, Herald.
>>
>>83164020
I just bought the issues since they weren't going to be in the SS trades

I'm so glad that DC stopped using glossy paper. The third trade is like twice as thick with the same number of issuesas the first two, but it just looks better

>>83164138
>nobody ever remembers Northstar's terrorist phase
>>
>>83164138
He actually lived in a circus at first, but his joining the extremist group was REALLY brief.
Like, they were separatists and he was okay with that, but then he found out they were going to bomb something and then stopped it, got rid of the bomb and then beat them all up for the cops to find later.
Basically nobody even knew he was a member of an extremist group because he thought he was a member of a regular separatist group, not a terrorist cell.

Byrne also kinda clarified that Jean-Paul's anger during the period stemmed at least partially from his homosexuality and not really knowing how to deal with it at first.

This is the reason the Squad doesn't work anymore.
To REALLY make it so that the Squad has an actual point, you need to either have the USSR be around (so that "deniable operations" are the norm when working overseas), or you need a comics author who (like Ostrander) is really knowledgeable about foreign situations and external politics and how they relate to the US in a non-public "this was just on CNN/Fox and therefore censored as fuck" fashion.

The current crop of comics writers are the grown-up insular neckbeard collectors fans of the 90's, and the more insular the fandom the less time they have to go out and learn things other then their hobby, which includes current events and geopolitics.

You'd also need to be willing to make a comic that would piss a lot of people off; the equivalent of this first arc would be the Squad breaking into North Korea basically to kill a North Korean superteam.

>>
>>83164521

I was just about to throw his name out too.
>>
>>83163873
The latter. While he's demonstrated he knows how Zemo deals with Fixer, he seems to mostly use him comedically. He's got no sense of menace to him, or intimidation. Most damning though? Hes got no charisma, which is pathetic.
This is the guy who I believed, partially because of these threads, to be one of the more compelling Marvel villains, and here he's practically a punchline. I get Red Skull is Cap's Arch-Enemy, but given we already know he's going to be part of some HYDRA civil war with Zemo, given how he's written, this hardly send even.
>>
>>83164462
that's why I'm excited that Ostrander is writing the Squad breaking into the Hague, that's probably not going to be weak shit
