Days like this are why I still read comics.

Justice League 50 was kind of a mess and Darkseid War as a whole was a disappointment but holy hell Rebirth was fantastic.

Is there anything I should read to catch up?

Rebirth is legit the best thing DC has put out in years.

The question is if DC can keep it up and use it as the foundation for the DCU going forward. If they can, it'll could very well be a dawn of a new age for the company.

It would be great if DC could recapture the almost 50/50 market share of the past. Both Marvel and DC had better output when they had a true quasi rival relationship.
>>
Thank you based DC, good work on beating the fuck out of Marvel on this glorious day
>>
For the first time in a long time, I'm legitimately optimistic about the future of DC comics.

As a fan of New 52 Superman, I wouldn't really call today my day. Superman #52 was shit, unceremoniously killed off Superman just so post-crisis Superman could be the One True Superman and Rebirth is basically a big middle finger to anyone who actually liked the New 52.

Good to see Wally back at least.
>>

>Steve Rogers: Hydra Agent
This is a thing!?

No, while reality was getting reset back to how it was at the end of Flashpoint, Dr. Manhattan stole 10 years from the DCU which caused the whole timeline to get fucked up.

JL 50 was a mess, but it had moments I absolutely loved.
Rebirth gave me feels a comic hasn't been able to illicit out out me in years.
Even Superman and Grayson were enjoyable today. Unlike the day JL 1 was released, I find myself legitimately, unreservedly hyped for and interested in where the DCU goes from here.

Is anyone else just feeling "meh" over the whole thing?
I mean, i thought everyone was in on the hypercrisis so everything was already part of the same story. New 52 was always just another timeline that we were focusing on now to me. I think it's just the inclusion of the watchmen that will be okay, and even then, i don't see them beating manhattan in a fist fight and dragging it out as they challenge his world views. No one cares about the stories, they just want THEIR characters back. But hopefully we do get good stories, and a cleaner history because shit was ridiculous before flashpoint.

It's a social marketing campaign, just like #makeelsaalesbian and #captainamericasuckscock

notice how they're all owned by Disney and each campaign followed right after the other

none of those people will be buying a comic

america #1 was storytimed once and no one cared but ever since then there have been constant "that is it I am never reading captain america again" threads cause bad publicity is good publicity according to marvel and the mouseketeers of the MCU-Shillverse are out in force.

Rebirth on the other hand has been storytimed at least 3 times now and people have been genuinely excited about it.

DC did good I just hope they can continue building on this and keep the momentum going

Bull-fucking-shit. Since Rebirth came out there have been constant new threads here and places like r/comicbooks talking about it compared to only a couple of Cap ones. DC will never reclaim that market. They aren't willing to do the scummy things Marvel are. Remember, Marvel makes a ton of money through the collectors market with variant covers, relaunches to get #1 money, constant events that take place in multiple books, etc.

Stood by DC when my friend bailed after ndcu and wally west getting shitted on. I love rebirth. I'm bummed Rayner seems to be given then ndcu wally west treatment but man its a great time to be a DC fan.

Im so excited and scared they are going to fuck this up royally. Said buddy might be coming back to DC.

Exactly.
People clearly enjoy DC movies more, there's just this conspiracy between the theater chains and Disney that causes a certain percentage of the box office receipts to be "mistakenly" assigned to the wrong film.

And of course all critics are paid hirelings of Disney as well.

I usually read my comics in marvel first, ordered from new or what I like least to best, then DC. I broke that to read superman 52, and justice league 50 just to get to rebirth.

I can't be the only one bummed about ndcu supes and his death being so anti climatic. Superman Unchained and jeans and shit sold me on him.

what's relatable about any of their new "Diverse and Politically Correct" characters?

They're literal vehicles that have no actual weight on anything.

Just to clarify, there was no in-comic confirmation of Dr Manhattan being responsible for anything, right? Just vague hints (that I'm guessing have been confirmed in interviews)

I feel like that this event will be cool, but ultimately they're just gonna do a ohey stupid crossover event in a year afterwords.

>>
>>83169820
Right, but nothing within the comic actually confirms that Dr Manhattan is the big bad Wally was talking about. Like if I read this with no context from the Internet / interviews, I might just as well have though that it's just a huge teaser for Dr Manhattan coming back to Earth to fight against some big bad.
>>
Wally being the MC of it was a great surprise.

>Because the stories are set in real cities. The heroes are more "human". It is trash. I usually stop talking comics with them at that point.

It is. Yes I can enjoy the MCU movies because they're like junk food. But once DC finds a way to finally serve us an actual story from their mythos (not some stupid jizz-story by Snyder), I'd reckon people will get a kick out of it too.
>>
>>83169722
Closest you got was the location on Mars where Manhattan fucked off to at the end of the watchmen and the watch reassembling itself.

Oh and the blue explosions of Pandora and owl man
>>
The sad thing is that Marvel will still sell better. That's not sad because it's Marvel though, it's sad because it has nothing to do with storytelling. They are now in a cycle where a book that isn't double shipping gets 6 - 8 issues before interrupted by an event that will last for months and then another line wide reboot. In the meantime they have obscene requirements for variants pushing up the order numbers from stores. Who knows maybe the returns from Marvel "Now" will see even further diminishing returns and DC will bring people back with good stories
>>
>>83158327

>>
>>83169977
More yo be explained. Right now we have pre ndcu supes returning as the one true superman. Lex is the new man of Steel, waiting to find out about ndcu Lois and Lana as they were both hit by Supes energy dissipation when he died. Then there is the China superman. Exciting times.
>>

>>83169890
>DC finds a way to finally serve us an actual story from their mythos
This. All the DC films from the last ten years, have nothing to do with the actual storytelling style of DC's comics, you may say that the Nolan Trilogy was successful, but all it was is an affirmation of what Johns is talking about. This is the reason why they wrote MoS that way, to keep in step with the tone that The Dark Knight did. As a result, like the Nu52, the DCEU is also devoid of Love, and Hope.
>>
>>83158249
Justice League 50 had craggy faced Darkseid baby, that shit is amazing.
>>
>>83158327
There's nothing wrong with dark and grim, the probably is the vast vast majority of DC's output has been extremely gritty. Granted there's the occasional exception like Gotham Academy, but it's far and few between./
>>
>>83170157
I liked the "ALL OF THE DICKS" scene from Grayson.
>>
>>83170080
He escaped from the flashpoint timeline alteration due to the events from Convergence.

They're also pushing now the idea that the New52 world is just the Pre-Flashpoint world modified by an outside entity, so I don't think New52 Superman will return, at least not as the main Superman, since Pre-Flashpoint Superman is the actual Superman of the main Earth.

Rebirth mentions that neither Superman are what they thought they were. Pre-Flashpoint Superman doesn't realize that he's in his own world, rather than a visitor from a dead universe, but New52's Superman true identity isn't clear at this point.

And New52 Superman
>>

>>
>>83169935
>DC will bring people back with good stories

That hasn't worked for thirty years.
Why the hell would that change now?
Fact is, people want to read what they want to read, and most people want to read stuff that already makes them comfortable (characters they already know about, basically) rather then try new things because new is hard and scary and most people don't want entertaining themselves to be even the smallest bit more difficult then it absolutely has to be.
I mean how many annoying fanboys in this very thread would never touch Marvel-anything in a million years despite the "intense rivalry" between them being largely artificial and mostly a result of Joe Quesada shitting the bed between both of them and stopping the semi-common cross-company crossovers and frequent jumping between company to company writers and artists did back in the day?
How many will immediately say 'MAHVEL SHILL" just because I read both and don't choose and arbitrary side like a nine year old playing with GI Joe or Cobra toys in the playground in kindergarten?

Most people are content with what they already know and Marvel has been better known for some time now in the comics industry itself (at least since the 90's), so that's what people know and go for.
>>
>>83170155
>with the actual storytelling style of DC's comics

My not touching anything Marvel anymore has nothing to do with DC. I think their business practices are toxic and I won't be their bitch
>>
>>83170275
Fucking agreed.
Disney is now aware that no matter what they do the comics market is going to shrink, so they've just seemed to say
>"Fuck it, literally do anything you think will boost sales even temporarily so we don't have to carry you TOO much so we can farm your dumb ass for IP's."
Though WB's "Funding Gladiators" style of subsidiary management means that all the divisions of WB suck dick at doing anything 100% right they at least don't leash their subsidiaries quite as tightly.

Goddamn what a simpler world this would be if Marvel and DC just owned themselves again.
Of course then we'd probably never get good movies again either, but there you go.
>>
>>83170371
But do they even have a style? I wouldn't call Dial H and Actions Comics similar stylistically.

I got two friends to read Rebirth, and now those two friends are going to be buying books alongside me.

Johns, you did it, you absolute madman.

Rebirth is also the reason those two friends are actually interested in Watchmen. Niggas haven't even heard of the book until I told them about it. Watchmen isn't "sacred" if it isn't relevant anymore. But now it will be.

The market was crashing on it's own.
Monthly comic books do just not make the money back that they used to.
Honestly if the market crashes then DCD might go out of business and then DC and Marvel can finally make sustainable business models for comics that aren't made at a tremendous financial loss on a per-issue basis like they are now, so there's that possibility I guess.
>>83170389
Yeah I know.
But there's still a lot of shitbirds that attack someone just for defending older Marvel stories or Marvel films they enjoyed because somehow the idea of someone liking more then one thing triggers their autism harder then Joe Chill triggered Bruce Wayne's parents.
>>
>>83170226
That's what I was getting at. Marvel fans keep pushing it that DC reboots every year or some shit, even though that's patently false.

Vision is literally the only good book they have. Marvel doesn't give a fuck about their comics but when they saw they had something accidentally fall into their laps that was solid gold they tried to push Vision as hard as they could.

I love how I only needed to wait until the time I finished shaving to have my point be proven.
I won't argue Marvel has made bad comic NOW because yes, they definitely have and it's hard for me to watch.

But I'll argue plenty that for years Marvel and DC were about equal in the amount of good stuff and the amount of shit they had, and that it only really started to shift far worse for Marvel about 6 or 7 years ago, and even THEN a lot of the nu52 was garbage and you damn well know it otherwise you wouldn't be so fucking excited over Rebirth like I am.
>>
>>83170710

No. In the future I wouldn't mind a story about the Question and Rorschach going after the same guy but with Vic trying to stop him from killing the guy.
>>
>>83170774
>won't argue Marvel has made bad comic NOW because yes, they definitely have and it's hard for me to watch.

I'd argue that the guy you're responding to is talking about current Marvel
>>
>>83170715
Honestly, Vision's great but it's also not really a Vision story at all since it basically ignores all the character and personality and development he's had over the years.
It's more like it's a great comic that happens to be published by Marvel; it doesn't really rely on anything about the character or his history to tell a story at all.
>>
>>83170842
If he is, then yes, fair enough.
It honestly hurts to see how bad it's gotten because I love so many characters from both companies.

Thing is, I'm worried after Rebirth despite the restoration of the old DCU that there's going to be more "meh" then good at DC, only now it will be "meh" with continuity.
>>
>>83170715
People like Moon Night too, I guess? It's obviously a movie pitch though. It'd be mid tier at DC but it's top tier for The House of Bad Ideas

actually, what's bad with Marvel is going to eventually affect everything. I mean just look how bad they've pandered:

and now Nazi Symphatizer Steve Rogers.
>Korean Hulk
>Genderbent deadpool

All of them don't even have a rich backstory, and to make matters worse, this recent reveal about Cap is so sickening.

But that's false. DC has a history of comics that are must read genre defining titles, like all the Vertigo books or TDKR. Marvel has tripe like Civil War or Secret Wars. Sorry, but there is flat out no comparing the two.

>B...but New 52...
You obviously don't read DC because you don't understand what people's issues with N52 were. The books weren't bad, it was the loss of history and weird reimaginings that pissed people off.

But keep fucking trying, Mouseketeer. I'm sure eventually your desperate ramblings will hit on something.
