He was never that edgy, he was just a little brash when he was young, and fans don't know how to react to anything different outside of whining "NOT MUH!!!". Shortly after the Justice League had formed, wasn't he trying to find a home for hamsters that belonged to a criminal he put away? And did nobody read Paktion Comics? Especially the first arc, probably some of the friendliest Supes stuff in existence. I personally like that the character had some variations throughout his lifetime.
