I actually get a lot more attention from industry people when I post my work on Twitter. But having an art blog on tumblr is a overall good idea, you don't have to get involved in the sjw or fandom stuff, just post art. There's a lot of great artists there.

How simplistic a medium is determines how big it gets. Compare 40k to Undertale, for example.
40k has a lexicanum for info for normies, but it's large and intimidating and the canon changes very often which will leave fans in the dust.
Undertale is about a kid, skeletons, fish lizards, and goatpeople, and an assortment of monsters. Any shmuck can go on the Undertale Wiki and know just about as much about the game as someone who played all 3 endings. Sometimes by speedreading the wiki in 5 minutes.
And back to the original point, once basics are known, the fan creations can sustain the fandom forever afterwards.
