Initially it was dependent on that yes, and it might not be useful for magica's specific spell, but I wouldn't doubt it's become a totem of some power. now that scrooge himself is gone, it's the largest piece of his soul remaining on this plane of existence. It was useless to him because it was already his soul, but to another, it'd have value.
It's now a treasure in it's own right, at least. The first earned coin of the richest duck of an era.
