Why the hell are Vivienne's animations so popular? They're so amateurish and have no substance to them. It's just shitty looking furries to pop music. How can anyone look at her work and think this is good animation?

Because furries are possibly the WORST judges of animation. If it has an anthro in it and something moving then its A+ 100% greatest thing ever.

>>82978573
For 2D animation? Because I can find like, ten new amazing 2D videos on a daily basis. Going through Vimeo alone can get you lost for days:
https://vimeo.com/categories/animation

Unless you meant 2D furry animation. In which case, I'm sure I can scour around and find a dozen furry animators in a short amount of time who are better than her. Fuck, Zootopia alone should be enough to convince people her Zoophobia comic is shit.
>>
As we've said like a million times before, her animation is amateurish and her comic would be better if it actually had a protagonist instead of a giant entourage.

It's one of the few cases where just being furry pandering garbage would be an improvement.
>>
>>82977359
You're going to have to explain why it's "amateurish" considering there are plenty of worse animations out there, even in professional fields.

Die Young was okay for a short little fan animation because it just looked like she was having fun with one of her favorite songs, not trying to do something particularly good. Then it exploded because of teenagers who thought it was the second coming of furry jesus. There's a whole subsection of them that devote themselves to making shitty ms paint animations of warrior cats and sparkle dog wolf packs. I sometimes do a little voice work and I come across six billion 'casting calls' for these things. It blows my mind, but some of them have thousands and thousands of views. So it's not surprising to me that there are so many people singing her praises and inflating her ego. I was hoping she was going to improve, some of her work in progress things look pretty good, but after seeing how rushed and janky Silhouette was I'm now convinced she's just going to keep pumping out mediocre animations set to pop music to keep her fan base secured.

Because it's the exact opposite of the kind of animation people are used to seeing now. A lot of people often think that if something is animated on the 1s, it just looks good but even if you animate on the 1s/2s/3s, things need to have proper weight, timing, anticipation, foreshortening, overlapping action. Stuff needs to flow naturally. I could go on about this for a while but yeah Viv just needs to work on being less tacky, she's already half of the way there.

i have the same problems she does and need to work on the same stuff

The only reason you're even going out of your way to bring this up is because this animation is actually good enough to not be counted awful, but not "perfect" enough for you to find it flawless. There's BILLIONS of animations online that are worse animated AND Just as popular if not more so. But you're not going to make a thread about those because it doesn't show off your tastes as an entertainment consumer by criticizing something that actually looks pretty good on the surface. Sure you can deconstruct it and point out all the flaws, but fundementally, as just a piece of animation on the internet made by someone who just wanted to make a music video of her characters? It's pretty good.I hope she gets better and fixes her mistakes, but I'm not gonna act like it's shitty just because it has flaws.
>>

I know you said YouTube animation, but a lot of TV animation is pretty happy/comfy these days. Steven Universe, Wander Over Yonder, We Bare Bears, Harvey Beaks. Yeah sure, they might have a scary moment here and there, but in general, they're pretty light hearted shows compared to what we used to have with Billy & Mandy, Animaniacs, etc. It's not exactly like we're on a shortage of feel-good cartoons.

Because Sans is a talking kid created by a man from CalArts, like everybody knows.

Or maybe the creator of the picture saw that he had only four pictures of actual cartoon characters to illustrate his words, knew that it was not that much, and decided to add Sans and Gumball to convince himself he was right.

There's a lot of animation but the animation isn't like.. good, if you know what I mean. They went with quantity over quality, a lot fof the frames look good as stills but look completely wrong in motion. They have the talent but they've nothing to guide it, I suppose.

Also furries will eat up anything that's designed to appeal to them even remotely, so that's the popularity right there. Normals can share the work too because the animation is.. well, it's there. Like I said it's Not Good but laypeople aren't a great judge of that.

I don't understand this mindset of "it's suppose to be bad, it's for fun!". The animation has a lot of problems with it and it's not just nitpicking. Volume shapes change, lip sync is bad, the timing is too fast, lines strobe, the palette is unpleasant. This isn't like, Homestar's pilot where that was shitty but it was done for fun by guys who couldn't draw. This was done by an art school graduate who still makes mistakes like drawing hands backwards. At a certain point, "it's just for fun" is just a lazy excuse for "I'm not that good".

I'm about to graduate art school and this is probably one of the best "finished" things I've ever made
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xsFeAL554o

I'm not saying it's flawless. I'm saying it's got a lot of time, effort and work put into it, and most of the mistakes I'm seeing are still just mostly in timing, solid drawing, and your personal opinion on the color palette. It's not "bad". My animation is 10x worse and I'm about to get a degree.

This.

There are tons of people that have graduated business school that have fuckall knowledge of how to actually run a real world business. There are people with multiple certifications that couldn't assemble a computer.

On top of that, as soon as there's a new standard for animation software, if these graduates don't strive to keep up, they'll be left behind with their antiquated degree on the wall.

Is it just me or does she draw EVERYBODY with their shoulders positioned all the way up to their ears almost ALL the time? A lot of things about her art bug me but this bugs me the most. The "rule" is that your elbows are at about the halfway point of your torso. She uses this rule but she doesn't take into account the fact that their shoulders are shrugging so high, so the upper part of the arms gets extended instead of the whole arm just being moved up.
>>
>>83001831
A degree means nothing, but art school does. Anyone can get a degree but it's up to the student to actually apply themselves and work with teachers to get better. If you just strive through all four years in your comfort zone and never break out once you graduate, it's your fault. If you are unable to even critique your own work to the point where you can't see volume constantly changing in your animation (Viv has been animating the same way for 5 years, she probably doesn't even see mistakes because she does not train herself to see them), that's her fault.

If the art school is shitty, there is nothing you can do. However, I went to the same school as Viv and was a couple of years ahead of her and took the same art teachers, who were all great. If she was unable to get better after taking them, that's still her own fault. One of her teachers for a couple of years was a Disney animator for God's sake. I don't know what went on in the class, I was not there with her, whether her class work was amazing, whether she ignored the teacher and barely passed, or whether the teacher loved her stuff, but I do know with the teacher she took, there is no fucking way she should have graduated that school with the same skill level as when she entered.
>>

Elaborating.

3rd year animation class, Mario has an assignment every year where he pairs students up to work on an animation assignment. This one involves a bear and a bird fighting each other. Viv gets paired with a friend of mine. Before I continue said friend heard rumors about Vic but didn't want to pad judgment before getting to know her. They are given two weeks to work on this. Friend asks viv for information to keep in contact. Viv lags on the project and doesn't complete her half or tell her partner about her progress for about a week and a half. Vic gives in her part whatever the project for done, friend isn't mad at her...yet. Comes class time to critique the work. Teacher hates the animation and thinks it's shit, loaded with errors. Animation is critiqued based on both of their animation flaws so their is no biased as to who fucked up. Teacher asks viv first why it looks so bad. Her response, " oh well anon didn't do her part, I did mine" doesn't take responsibility for a piss poor assignment that both of them failed just blamed her partner for it. The teacher believing viv is disappointed in her partner for the poor quality but Viv gets away Scott free. She has been hated throughout sva for making up excuses for her self and refusing to improve, whining about her online sparkle dog drama with dollcreep to people who have her the time of day, and being an otherwise pompous cunt but everyone witnessed what kind of a person she really was that day and how willing she was to put the blame on someone else for something she was a part of.

This is bad animation but that bone animated Mystery Skulls shit heap is okay?

Her character desings are alright, but I feel that the animation itself moves too fast. My eyes only have mere seconds to take in what's happening. It kind of hurts to watch.

as someone who legitimately wants to be a professional character designer someday, it's offensive how she can shit out crap like this and call herself a "designer" of anything at all.

>>
For amateur animation and ignoring the subject matter I think it is ok. Like hell, I can't do lineart for even a single frame. That person just kick my ass like 30 times over easily and plus some with a 2 second gif.

Hard to bitch when you can't do much better yourself. While I like Gumball, early Adventure Time and even Steven Universe I can understand why people shit all over the art style for those. More so for Steven when the backgrounds have more detail than the characters. With the thing in the OP though I honestly bet most people on /co/ can't do much better.

With that said though I don't go on tumblr or whatever. One reason why I can still enjoy Steven Universe. If the person who animated that is some crazy bitch then whatever, that have nothing to do with the animation at hand. Hope that answer your question OP, basically I don't know the person or have anything against them while their art is better than what I could ever do.
>>
>>83006556
"I can't do better" is not a justifiably measure for a skill level. Art isn't judged on a learning curve.
>>
>>82989871

thats a roadkill face baby
>>
>>83006635
Fair point. Than again some guy can throw a tomato at a wall and call it art. Technically speaking it could easily become "real" art. Art is such a stupid debatable subject that at the end of the day it doesn't matter.

If you can do something that I can't personally do then I'll call that impressive. If you did something that literally anyone can do then who give a fuck?

This sounds like the words of someone who's salty that one of their classmates gained some form of success while they didn't. Is it unfair that she gained that success despite not being as skilled as other animators? Perhaps. However life isn't fair so deal with it.
>>
>>83007757

theres a lot of webcomics on the internet, that doesn't make you successful
>>
>>83007757
Nigga, we're on an anonymous image board. If this isn't the perfect place to vent about shit that doesn't matter, then I don't know where is.
>>
The big irony is that when you become a professional animator so much of the art and technique aspect of the job is delighted or outsourced that you find yourself acting like a manager rather than an artist. You draw just enough for a sweat shop studio in to keep the art consistent and from there it's all management.

Why the hell do you assume if someone thinks the animation is low tier, somehow they don't know what they're talking about?
>>

Not you(you/) you(general). That did kind of come off as accusatory, huh?

I can't draw for crap but it doesn't mean I don't know about squash, stretch, etc. Knowing enough about Animation to rate it is different than being able to do it, both take some knowledge but I would say first hand experience is much more potent than book knowledge.
>>
>>82988918

>>
>To be good it must obey a rigid set of rules

That's approaching a level of autism that would make the average /mlp/ poster back away slowly with an awkward smile.
>>
>>82985374
The problem with her animation and designs is that they are incredibly, exceptionally difficult to "read." It's hard to tell what's happening. My eyes almost start to hurt sometimes.

Can't confirm the story (Was not in her class), but can confirm there's a lot of details in there that only someone who was in the class or was told of the event by a classmate could have known. I took Mario's class and did the assignment as well: https://vimeo.com/90296411

I never met Viv, but based on what other people have said, it sounds true. A couple of people who spoke about her also said how she spent a lot of time on her phone during classes to browse her Tumblr, but I never really noticed any drama while in school with her. Like, people in the halls didn't sneer when she walked by or anything like that which is what the story makes it sound like. She was actually pretty social and often in the halls with her friends.
