I think it was poor management and over-ambition. They were talking about a fucking anime and 12 movies before the game was even finished in the design department.
Keiji Inafune just made the game because Capcom kept fucking over Mega Man and he wanted to make another one so he proposed a clone of it. The money they stole was worth less than the amount of time Hussie wasted trying to get them to actually show him something, to the point where he moved across the country so he could work with them personally.
Eventually he just cut his losses, got a lot of the money back and started from scratch by forming his own studio. The time it would have taken to get involved in a lawsuit would have just pushed the game (and comic, this was a big part of the gigapause) back even further.

I love MSPA and Steven Universe, and I'd love to see something inspired by both of them, I just really don't think flatly stealing the format and cutting it off from the point of the format (user commands) and making your characters look like MS Paint edits of SU characters to post on DA is the best way to combine the two influences.

what i like about mspa's format is hussie's philosophy that comic art doesnt need to get messed up by text. i really appreciate that every panel gets its own page and that the text is kept entirely separate, the author can focus more on the dialogue without worrying about the constraints of the art on the page, or creating useless pages of panning around scenery just so text will have something to go on top of.
I also like the use of gifs for quick movments that dont warrant 3 or more panels, but get the job done with a single quick animation. its neat
as for the SU influence, its more than just how the characters are drawn, the overall emotion behind the show is really wonderful. especially with the use of color and light/ really appealing scenery used for almost every scene. its not something I'm used to in cartoons. but yes, the art style is fun to draw to an extent

I don't know enough about Neo-Kosmos because I dropped that shit from the Burj Khalifa when they starting gushing over how "interesting" gender was, but if it borrows more than just the format from MSPA then I would consider it a fan adventure.
