White is clearer, but it can get a bit hard on the eyes if it's kept up for too long.

Yo: Any traditional media Ausfags looking non-repro blue sketching pencils in Australia and having no luck, check out Officeworks for these chunky bad boys. They're the best thing I've found yet, clear, smooth, non-waxy and eraseable, and they're only a dollar to boot.

I bought a bunch of their Quill-brand artboard, too. I'll get around to testing how it takes ink in a week or so - I'll try and remember to report on the results in one of these threads.

I'm glad you went back to the original joke. The punch one seemed almost like a bad strawman comic.
>>
>>82854392
Can it be a strawman if the person is real and just as much of a jerk as I wrote him to be? He was actually worse irl but I doubt anyone would believe that.
>>
>>82854422
>Can it be a strawman if the person is real and just as much of a jerk as I wrote him to be?
Yes, because you'll never know the inside of his mind and the comic doesn't even make an attempt to understand his position.

Regardless of whether you think the real life person was in the wrong or not, your comic depicts a one-note caricature meant to be ridiculed. Even if you don't think your use of it here is uncalled for, that character is a strawman. This does not make you a bad person or curse your comic to being bad, that's just how you chose to present him.
>>
>>82854075
You are stupid.
>>
>>82853175
Thanks! That's good to hear.
>>
>>82854481
Your right i dont know what was going on in the guys head. However, the only side he showed to me was quite terrible and uncalled for in this selling. It's one thing to be given critique in a classroom setting or if you asked for it. Even here is fine because asking for it is implied. Giving your opinion to someone doodling in a coffee shop when you don't know them does say something about his character imo. This wasn't included but he also went on to tell me how he is a successful interior designer and his paintings go for a lot of money. I of course have no way of proving or disproving that but it was quite obvious (at least to me) that he wanted to prove to a random other person that he was somehow better than them when in reality that would do nothing but boost his ego. I wasn't given anything sympathetic to go one is what I'm getting at. Same goes for the other people Mimi has had to deal with so far with the exception of the first guy and the woman with the dog who did nothing wrong.

>>82854422

Yes, because the only person reading the comic who knows for an absolute fact that person is real is you. Most people who read it especially on /co/ are going to think it's a strawman like 9000 other strawman comics.

Skeggöld is cute. CUTE!
>>
>>82854653
I think you're missing the point. Your value judgements have no bearing on whether or not the character is a strawman, nor does being a strawman instantly equate to something bad.

You asked if that really counts as a strawman and I am telling you that yes, a character this simple who exists in-comic just to be mocked or harmed in response to his behavior/opinions is a strawman.

For the sake of your character writing, but not necessarily real life, I implore you to think deeper on situations like this sometime. There's a LOT of places people can come from when doing awful things, and thinking out the various places these actions can come from really helps in being able to craft characters that are engaging.
>>
>>82854865
My apologies for being unclear. I wasn't defending him as not a strawman. I asked the question in the first place since it was indeed a concern I had in the first place. I wrote what I did as an explaination of why he's written the way he is. When it comes to fictional people I look at their actions (or at least I try to) from many angles. He isn't a fictional person. He's a guy that pissed me off in a starbucks. He isn't afforded the same luxury not that it affects him in any way.

I openly admit that what he said bothered me more than it should have. I hate people like him and I'd like to someday prove him wrong.
>>
Hey /co/ I need your opinion. Which one of these two webcomics would you rather read and why? I think I know which one is better, but asking anyway:

WEBCOMIC 1
-----------
Modest 40 chapters of British Adult Drama/Humour/Erotic/LGBT/Slice of Life/Emotional Rollercoaster (story set in present time, about love & people struggles.)

OR

WEBCOMIC 2
------------
Epic 300+ chapters of Adult Shonen Parody/Humorous/Erotic/Black Comedy/Absurd/Mindless Fun with sex, drugs and violence on top of it. Story set in fictional magical universe, about typical shounenshit so things like monsters, shipping, hatred, ki blasts, transformations etc.

Unless your chapters are two pages, 40 chapters is not "modest". At five pages a chapter we're talking about a graphic novel. At 20 we're talking about three or more.

You might wanna edit down both stories substantially before deciding

I'm an asshole because I think someone who cares about their payday more than their story but ALSO thinks they should go the webcomic route instead of looking for a publisher should look for a different field? What are you even on about?

Their business strategy sounds pretty terrible for them AND their reader. I don't have anything against people trying to get paid, but their approach reads as either "I'm stretching my story to maximize profits" or "I'm forsaking the story if I don't profit quickly", both of which are contemptible.
>>
>>82856065
No need to apologize, like I said it's a minor nitpick.
I like the changes you've made to the characters, btw.
>>
>>82856140
That doesn't even make sense. If they're going to drop it that nonchalantly their other job wouldn't be "distracting" because they weren't going to do the comic for anything but money in the first place, and if they need to get paid that badly there's no reason they can't seem a publisher. Or hell, write the story so that they neither stretch it for cash or cut it short, moving into their next project and building a fanbase, because God knows we already have too many unfinished and endless webcomics.

I don't see what's objectional about this. If getting paid is that important there's plenty of other art fields to pursue.

There aren't submission systems in america the way there should be. If it's not sheer luck, it's nepotism. Meritocracy is the farthest thing from what's happening.
>>
I really don't expect anyone here to be able to answer that by the way.
>What publishers
I mean consider how big a deal it was when Oni opened submissions.

Something like that should not be a significant event in this country, but for some reason it is. Doesn't anyone find that odd?

No one does. But you better not open a patreon either! You greedy pig.
>>
>>82851678

I'm thinking of submitting to Hiveworks. Does anyone know what they offer to creators besides from what's on their submissions page? Right now, it just looks like they can run your website and run ads, so all you have to do is update, but I find running your comic site to be the easy part.

I'm trying to find out how much creators can get paid but I guess that's NDA stuff because I can't find that out anywhere.

I find it strange how secret people try to keep this.

>>
>>82857457
>if it's A) worth something to people
I find this dishonest.

This is webcomics. Only a very small percentile of a fanbase pays for anything relating to something they get for free anyway.

They can like it, love it, but never ever pay for it, for years. Those years are what get people. I hope you understand what I mean by that. Because explaining it is gonna be a bitch.

well for one thing, less eye-burning brightness. easier to enjoy in a darker room, which is just preferred in general. but especially to save energy. that's why 4chan, tvtropes, any good website has a 'night mode' to relax your eyes.. and for the early years of computers, light on black was your only option. also whatever art you're showing, it shows up better without being drowned out by surrounding brightness. of course it varies tremendously.

now if your comic is predominantly super light in color, having white text on black can actually be kinda hard to read. and if the comic is PURE black and white, it'll be damn near impossible to tell the word balloons from the art. in this regard, cat ghost trolling has a bit of an issue. thankfully the comic isn't complicated or hard to follow in general
>>
>>82857753
Yes. Although I'm not the anon you were talking to.

I just don't think you know what dishonest means.
>>
>>82857805
Intellectually dishonest.

We're lying to ourselves when we think it. That's what I mean by it. I think I'm using it correctly.
>>
>>82857549
exactly. so most of us don't make money. but we still do it because it's worth something to us. and hopefully it'll be worth something to others too. and right now we're all trying the 'salami slices' method of funding, so that if it's worth even a tiny bit to everyone, if you make it convenient for them to throw you a few pennies, they can add up.
>>
>>82857802
I have never understood why people like "night modes". It's always strained my eyes, because, you know, it's dark.

Also
>tvtropes
>"good website"
>>82857831
I do not think you know what intellectually dishonest means, either.

It means intentionally using arguments you know aren't correct/have problems, just so you can "win". Like sophistry.
>>
>>82857831
Perhaps you were just splitting semantic hairs. I should have said 'worth working for'.. not just worth SOMETHING. obviously it's worth something. but is it worth your hard earned money.. and also are you going to be enough of a dick to put it behind a paywall

but yes, people are used to getting a lot of shit for "Free", but they still pay for INTERNET. and the content you put out there is part of that. If you weren't putting out content they enjoyed, internet would go the way TV is going now, with people just foregoing a subscription

Okay, I've made a bunch of comics that are not particularly funny to people who don't play a specific Spanish miniatures game. I want to put them up on a site that is not tumblr, because tumblr has problems with the strip size.

What non-tumblr page templates or solutions would you suggest? Sorry if this was asked a million times (I bet it was), I don't look into these threads very often.
>>
>>82857916
I'm talking more about people being honest about the situation they're dealing with.

People being told that if they're in it for the money they're in the wrong business. The problem with telling anyone that, is that everyone already knows it. Don't get into comics for the money: Super Duh II Turbo: Championship Edition HD.

We're talking about making a living, not fat stacks. When people ask about that, we should be talking about the likes of conventions, prints, gumroad, patreon, kickstarter, etc. Not giving them the 'Duh' lecture of not expecting huge profits.

I apologize for my pants on head retarded 90s PSA rapping posts about food not being free, but I have had this conversation in abundance, often to complete no-sells who won't get past the 'Duh' part.

Also, internet is an empire now. It just plain has the potential to outclass what TV can do. The internet can't go away at this point.
>>
>>82858066
the most logical place to post them is on the forum for that game.
>>
>>82858214
well the problem is your argument is 'because it costs money to live, and people should live, everyone deserves a living wage' which is a common sentiment but not a universal one, and economically speaking not a legitimate one. it's up to each living being to make itself useful enough to earn what it needs to live.
otherwise you're pretty right in general
>>
>>82857474
It's not unusual to NDA that shit at all or leave it unknown until contracts are out. In fact that's the most common practice among American comic publishers.
>>
>>82857802
>. and for the early years of computers, light on black was your only option.
And then everyone switched to black on-white because the studies showed it's way easier and faster to read, especially for people with astigmatism. If you're worried about eye strain, just make it an off-white.

>but especially to save energy
Unless you're using a CRT, darker colors don't take more energy to display on a screen than brighter ones.

I do agree. I'm just surprised because Hiveworks has been around for awhile. But when I searched to find more info about creator experiences, most just say "They helped with my website!" and not much else. I was surprised too but I guess they're really told to shut their mouths or get sued.

I know for sure featured creators on Line Webtoon is a guaranteed $2k monthly, and on Tapastic it's based off how many views you get (which can be decent or salty pennies)

>>
>>82858341
To go off on a bit of a tangent now, let's talk about our customers.

I get into a lot of heated arguments about the minimum wage. Obviously, the super rich would've been crucified if they ever tried to lower it. But it hasn't been adjusted for inflation either. It has naturally gotten lower and lower as the dollar becomes worth less and less.

These people, the young adults and adults, are our customers. The people who could pay us. They're having their balls ripped off them. If a problem affects them this way, it affects us even harder.
>>
>>82858606

I'm currently reading up on them.
I need to know, does any of the sites you know frown upon using swearwords, violence or racial slurs and stereotypes in the comic? As evidenced here, I sometimes use that for humour. Note that the game itself is decidedly 18+, mentioning things like cyber-furries bred for prostitution and whatnot and sometimes dropping f-bombs in manuals.
>>
>>82857211
I think you should be careful and read the fine print when it comes to Hiveworks. On one hand, they are really helpful with getting exposure and stuff but they ask for a big chunk of your profits. A little bigger than me and my colleagues were comfortable with. Also, they're a little weird with publishing rights. They consider themselves a publisher and want you to have digital rights to your stuff. There's a bit more but I will stress that you read the fine print for their guidelines and stuff before throwing yourself in...though frankly that's anything.

That's the problem I'm having. There's not a lot of info about them or people's experiences with them. I know they don't allow cross-posting, and some of what I've read reminds me a bit of what Tokyopop.
Honestly, I'm going with Line Webtoon and self-hosting, but I like to keep my options open.
>>
>>82858825
even if it does, you have to be MASSIVELY popular before anyone's going to actually notice, and have any chance of reporting your comic
most of the time hosts dont give any shits about content unless it's a general 'if it's adult content, mark it as such in your settings so search engines don't find it unless they want to' thing.
>>
I wonder how many people here are even AWARE of what Tokyopop was doing in the 00s.
>>
>>82858825
I don't believe comicfury has rules against anything so long as it's properly tagged and kept on the site itself, rather than the part that's shown on the comicfury registry (like, if your comic avatar that shown when looking at CF's list of recently updated comics is a huge white dick calling another, darker dick a nigger, that would be against the rules because people can see it without actually visiting your comic).

They do mention not allowing pornography, but considering one of my regular readers does a comic that's about futa rape barbarians and doesn't seem to have had any problems, I think that might be referring to live action stuff.

The forums are more strictly policed though (one guy from these threads got banned from them for using the word "faggot").

im still drawing my characters to decide how they will looki just need to draw 4 more to complete the cast and that will allow me to start drawing the cover and the first pages

Anyways i finished these guys, they are part of another team that usually ends up in scooby doo type adventures

the first guy has a talking cat knight ghost that always follows him works kinda like a weird combination of calvin and hobbes with jojo bizzare adventure

the other one is a noire detective wannabe that has a little Symbiote buddy, the symbiote gives him very specific powers that i will not explain right now because it would take too long

there is another member in this team but im still drawing him because he is supposed to look like a big brother figure to these guys and i haven't picked a design yet

Well, for a start, there's the other places where English is the native language - Canada (35 mil), Australia (24 mil), and the UK (65 mil).
Then there's the rest of Europe (only 38% of the EU speak English well enough to hold a conversation, but that's still over 150 million people), all the places that used to be controlled by the British Empire (India, for instance, has over a hundred million English speakers) where not a lot of the people are online but those who do are likely to speak English...
All in all there's around 1.5 billion English speakers in the world. The net's a big place.

I know we all start out bad at art/writing, and only with time and practise do we improve. But how do you motivate yourself to carry on during the period where you know you're producing stuff that's mediocre or worse? Especially since that period can last years?

Is the thought "one day I'll be good" motivation enough for you? If not, what is?
>>
>>82861096
>wow when did the UK get so populous?
About 1700.
>>
>>82861369
>But how do you motivate yourself to carry on during the period where you know you're producing stuff that's mediocre or worse?
If drawing and writing isn't its own reward, you're going to have a bad time.
>>
>>82859095
Do you keep your property rights with Hiveworks? I only care about having the right to print and post to my art tumblr/instagram and keeping the rights to my uh, properties.
>>
>>82861424
It is, but not all the time.

You can't honestly tell me you enjoy 100% of all art and writing you do.
>>
>>82861369
The best trick, I've found, is to have fun doing it. If you learn to enjoy the process of improving and learning, you can do it forever.

Aside from that, focus on your good points. Yeah, your stuff won't be the best in every respect, but I can almost assure you that if you try, someone out there will like it and appreciate it because it's got some quality to it that they're into. Not a lot of somebodies, but you'll have enriched someone's life a little because of what you did.

The trick, of course, is to focus both on focusing on what you're good at and fixing what you're bad at at the same time.
>>
>>82861369
>But how do you motivate yourself to carry on during the period where you know you're producing stuff that's mediocre or worse?
Fun fact: that period never ends.
You won't be good "one day", but you'll look at your own stuff 6 months from now and see which mistakes you've fixed.
>>
>>82861599
Well, then you've got more than the thought that "one day I'll be good" to motivate you, anyway.

Otherwise, no. It's not enough, to me at least. You've heard the saying about bicycles? It applies here. You'll get good by drawing because you like drawing.
>>
>>82861808
>You've heard the saying about bicycles?

No?
>>
>>82861369

>>
>>82861896
Oh. Uh, basically, three dudes ride their bicycle to a wise man's shrine, one because it's cheap, one because it's fast, and one because he wants to ride his bicycle. And the last dude is the good guy.

Ignoring new-age waffle, the point is to draw to draw, not to one day be successful.
>>

What's the other 5%?
>>
>>82861369
>how do you motivate yourself to carry on during the period where you know you're producing stuff that's mediocre or worse?

I'm not sure about retaining rights, teagreen said in a previous reply
>Also, they're a little weird with publishing rights. They consider themselves a publisher and want you to have digital rights to your stuff.

From HW's submission page about reposting comics:
>We don’t allow comics to be posted on multiple sites simply because that interferes with us promoting the comic and managing the ads.

I have the same concerns though. I think art is ok, just not actual comics being reposted to Tumblr, Tapastic, Line, etc. Reason probably being, they want a majority of the ad revenue and you get a cut
>>
>>82861469
>>82862364
Yes, you retain 100% of property rights with Hiveworks. They want a monopoly on digital sales and they want your comics on one site only (I'm unsure what their position on print sales is but I think it's more flexible). The second part I never had a problem with because that's always been my attitude towards my comic anyway.
>>
>>82862364
That makes sense to not want to split up the audience, but I hate the idea of not being able to post entire comics on my website. Not like it's any benefit to me since I don't have ads/site trackers... but I'm a very paranoid person. For example, I'm scared of the NSA.
>>

So my extreme want to draw thats only hindered by IRL responsibilities is always catapulting me back to doing this. I still feel burned out sometimes, but when I come back I feel so pumped. Knowing my standards=/=skills makes me just draw stories for only myself though. I still try to improve, of course, but I pay 2% attention to what what my readers like lmao and make stories that pander to ME. That's additional motivator because I actually like what I do. I improve little by little on the way. Around 1 centimeter per year.

How do you guys deal with scathing criticism? It always gets under my skin and makes me wanna quit
>>
>>82865719
Fili and Noli are RPG characters being played by Abby and Sara. While it's mostly an MMORPG, it's also possibly a tabletop game. None of this is explicitly stated.
It's also me doing a bargain basement Osamu Tezuka and re-casting characters from one set of stories into another. The "Bags of Holding" strip was the first one where I did this, because I couldn't be bothered coming up with new character designs for what was, at the time, a one-shot gag. It was only much later I decided to expand it into it's own series.
I also have it in mind to do a further iteration of EtMotL as a longform story with a proper setting and DEEPEST LORE, instead of the unspecified generic MMO the gag strips currently takes place in. But that's entirely dependent on me coming up with a story for it to take place in.

>>82866275
Until that strip, they didn't have names, though I mentally referred to them as Abby and Sara.

>>82865885
>>82865956
The various strips and series in the archives go back much further than 2012.
>>
>>82866338
I remind myself that it's far more valuable than idle praise, and then examine the criticism from every angle to make sure its valid. After that, it's just a matter of applying the valid points and ignoring the rest.
>>
>>82866340
Realize that it's going to happen more often as you go on and just mentally prepare yourself

Make note of what's helpful from the criticism and apply it to your next work

so yeah, basically everything >>82866488 said, including idle praise stuff

some blood
>>
>>82866334
I thought the statue in the first panel was a hooded figure (mouth is the hood opening) for quite a while. If that's intentional, it's bloody well done.
The guard's sword hand looks a bit off, like you drew the ahdn and then went "oh shit, she's supposed to have a sword". Especially in the final panel where you didn't draw the part that was covered up by the wizard in the first panel.

>>82866340
>EtMotL as a longform story with a proper setting and DEEPEST LORE

I don't know if that's a good idea. Having read the gag strip, I'd always have the thought that Fili and Noli are just player characters rattling in the back of my head, which would make it kind of hard to suspend my disbelief. Even if you just gave them some cosmetic changes, I'd have a much easier time accepting the story on its own merits.
>>
>>82866338
I'm odd, I don't like positive comments, either. I feel weird when my work gets positively reviewed, like I don't deserve it.

I try to remember not to take criticism personally and it's probably better than a hug box. I had someone go off on me once, calling my work immature and childish and no where near Stephen King level. I'm not really sure what all that was supposed to mean, but to be honest, I ignore those comments. But if someone is just being retarded (like commenting he wished he could smell me while I slept), I delete those comments and keep going.

I get that too - I'm like "holy shit dude, can't you see all these fuckups I made? Stop telling me it's more than decent!"

this, AND the fact that simply shallow gags (which end up being really clever and unexpectedly original) work better when you can mentally work them into ANY game you've played.

Think I'm about happy with this outfit.
Would you remember this knife?
Also, this hair doesn't seem too blue, right? Like, it's a believable old lady hair color?

>>82867886
comedy's comedy. learning how to laugh at yourself is what separates the kanyes from the rob schneiders
>>
>>82868988
>Would you remember this knife?
If you presented it in a more memorable fashion, yes.

Not talking about its physical appearance.
>>
>>82868988
i think i'd remember that.. the symbols probably.
her hair's realistically colored but it's pretty damn messy and weathered for being that long. impressive.. but implies if it was well taken care of it'd be like a foot longer.. which is already long as fuck. maybe it should be slightly yellowed or even slightly unevenly colored
>>
>>82869178
I think I can rework a few later panels to make it more prominent.

well within the context of OVA anime it kinda made sense. it was something you could joke about.. the bits thrown in just for flavor, making sure everyone was interested enough to buy the next one.
