I actually think his delivery worked really well though. It certainly helped sell the idea that the first season was his origin story, where Wilson Fisk, the kid he once was, the child who believed in saving Hell's Kitchen died and was replaced with the Kingpin.

he is over-praised because the mcu so rarely develops the villains and makes them into actual characters with mannerisms and back stories. they always focus on the heros too much while the villains are always generic. so along comes kingpin and omg great performance blah blah.

But I'm a huge fan of D'Onofrio in general, I think he is (or at least, used to be) underrated as an actor. I'd much rather watch his performance in a movie than someone like fucking Will Smith who just runs around being a retard the entire time.
