How come old comic art looks so bad compared to today? Art has been around for thousands of years. Was it because the artists were paid less or something?
It doesn't.
No computers/digital editing
A lot of artists in the Golden and early Silver age were focused producing a great quantity of pages instead of pages of a great quality. There is a huge jump in quality in Kirby's art once he stops penciling/doing layouts for like 6 ongoings at once and just focuses on Fantastic Four and Thor
Of course there are exceptions like C.C.Beck from Captain Marvel, Jack Cole from Plastic Man, and the EC artistshonestly even the early Kirby stuff looks better than a lot of what DC and Marvel are passing off today

Most of the pro artists were not in comics, exceptions like Winsor Mckay but newspaper strips were always higher prestige.
Comic books were low prestige so attracted people with no formal training, also the medium was young and people were figuring stuff out still

if you mean the colours, ink costs money so they used cheaper and shittier colours for a very long time. If you mean the art then get used it it, it's fine. There's good art and bad art in every era, and that Fantastic Four cover there looks a lot better than how Squirrel Girl looks today.
