Western TV cartoon animators don't understand choreography or cinematography. Everything lacks weight, understanding of colour and composition, and most importantly competent timing.

Anime does everything a million times better on a way smaller budget, every time.

One Punch Man and Dragonball are both terrible examples though.
>>
>>82852338
>>82852296
>>82852233
Not him but the context/music is what makes it considered good rather than the fight itself.

Like sure even that small Pearl/Amethyst fight earlier was better animated but everything about those Jailbreak scenes elevated the whole series, straight up rose it to another level.

That's not even a criticism you're just saying it's too popular. It's undeniably one of the most memorable moments of the series even next to better animated scenes because the sum of its parts was just mindblowing. If anything it being "overrated" just proves it's memorable.

>>
>>82856954
Yeah, which is why regret adding that last bit.
>>82856998
Because there's a somewhat large disparity between the two due to length which causes fluctuations in quality. Like the average Naruto ep looks competent artwise some times but is always animated so lazily unless there's a good director working on it. While shows like CB and Titan Trains will have eps with animation on par or higher than the best Naruto has to offer for almost the entirety of their runs. But I admit I was wrong.

Music and emotional context is only a small part of an animated fight scene. The animation is the most important part. Feels does not equal reals. SU's fight scenes are floaty and weightless with stupid headbutting and shit. Look at Samurai Jack, Tartakovsky's Clone Wars, Symbionic Titan, Avatar TLA and TLoK for well animated fight scenes.

I agree that animation is the most important part but music can definitely add a lot to a fight scene. Compare the two versions of this fight scene, the new one is much more intense because of the score even though animation and choreography are roughly equal.

Well, /co/, answer me this:
Which one has better fight scenes, cartoons or anime?

Pretty Cure is a children's show though.
>>
>>82862939
anime = cartoons
>>
>>82837718
I wonder if Fathering Wood will ever get a reboot?
Can't imagine it lining up well with the rest of the soft comedy that seems to make up current British children's programming.
>>
>>82863318
Never EVER. Noah's fucking Island would probably be "too dark" nowadays.
>>
>>82863318
Watership Down is getting a new series soon, so I imagine if that did very well a Farthing Wood reboot would be a good next step.

I don't think the upcoming Watership Down is going to be very good or do very well, though.
>>
>>82862939
By in large, the ones from Japan (aka anime).

It's almost a difference in philosophy. In that anime has more of a gimmik to the fighting and that's why more often then not there is violence. While western cartoons are more about situations and getting through them in an more often than not comical fashion.
>>
>>82844804
Count Nefaria is such bullshit he makes Doom look weak.

Anime, by far. The only fights I've seen in Western animation that come close to or possibly are on par with anime are from Avatar/Korra.

>>82863273
Not the same thing. Even if we pretend that they are semantically the same, he was clearly talking about Japanese vs. Western animation.

Nope, he was a crime lord and head of the Magia Crime Syndicate and decided one day that he wanted super-powers, so he had some scientist hook him up with the combined powers of Whirlwind, Living Laser, and Goliath at 100x their normal strength and basically became Superman.

He beat the shit out of the Avengers, laughed off shots from Thor's hammer, and wrecked both the Avengers and Thunderbolts single-handed in the 90s.

Dude is seriously broken as shit.

It's a bit of a gamble, sometimes science goes horribly wrong and you wind up as some kind of hideous monster or your powers are unstable and eventually kill you.

But most of the time, yeah, things turn out pretty well. And even in cases where you become a monster, like Abomination, you're still crazy powerful.

To be fair a lot of them don't even know what they're fucking doing any more. the quality has been slipping for about a decade now as it all gets more derivative. Instead of drawing from similar or shared sources they're just drawing from eachother which adds nothing and gradually loses novelty and ingenuity. It used to be that in the 60s-70s the marriage of live action cinematic composition with things like disney-inspired animation allowed for an approach to fantasy that almost entirely unique to animation. Then the 80s introduced teach heavy sci-fi elements that.lent themselves to a depth of world building that was, again, at the time unique to the medium. Things like Megazone23, Akira, Macross, parts of the Gundam franchise and that entire family of cyberpunk anime that focused on exploring a setting beyond singular flat backing set pieces. But that sense of place and of space are gone now. No one has crafted an actually engrossing world in an anime series in decades now. Not a single place that actually lends itself to being explored and in which locales are distinct and autonomous beyond their function to a singular plot. But that lack of place also comes from a lack of vision. Everything now can be summarized as "...like ______, but..." because that's exactly as it was concieved, not from a natural vision of objects interacting with their environment but a savvy of how pieces fit together based on how they've been seen to. It's a subtle degeneracy but it's one that has been slowly but surely narrowing off the capacity for innovation from Japan for years now.

I think a lot of animators in Japan have gotten started by just studying other people's work and practising. Hideaki Anno apparently was a very skilled animator even before he became a professional, and these days some people have been drafted as key animators without any prior professional experience (usually people start with in-betweening before they're promoted to key animation).

Anime is very different from the traditional animation of Disney, but it seems like people insist on sticking to the Disney ways.

A sense of place and space is just the norm in anime, not some special technique that's been lost.

Anime has seemingly gotten more derivative simply because they've been making anime for half a century now and there are less and less new things to do, and because these days there's so much anime being produced. You can't seriously expect everything to be groundbreaking and innovative and original, whether you're talking about anime, TV shows, movies, video games, books or music.

And you're of course cherry-picking all the good stuff from the past while neglecting the derivative and ho-hum works (how many mecha series were made vs. how many series people still talk about or even know of?).

This shit looks more like a shitty dance choregraphy than a fight.

It's like the music and singing is the central point and the fight must revolve around instead of the music matching the pace of the fight.
>>
>>82864593
People say this a lot, but it's an enormous exaggeration.

If we think about a very basic dialogue scene, it chains together mouth flaps, changes in camera angles, bits of animation, maybe shots of things other than the characters, and sound continuity. When these elements are combined in the right way, it seems much more dynamic than it technically is. Your brain fills in a lot of blanks.

How much animation these scenes contain varies a lot. Sometimes they are very basic, sometimes there's quite a lot of animation. It depends on the overall level of production, what they want to emphasize, who's animating and how on schedule the production is.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ave2HnnlYUo

And the amount of animation in general varies like that too. But all these claims about how anime is just still images and flapping mouths except for brief moments are just exaggerations or outright misinformation. They probably stem from some cheap daytime shows.
>>
>>82852613
>That over-exaggerated all over the place animation
Kinda rough to watch actually.
>>
>>82865352
I think what it's lacking is frame modulation, which seems to be an issue in a lot of American animation. There's excessive emphasis on having smooth, consistent animation (either on ones or twos) when what would often work better is fast, snappy movements.

But I think it's quite a good scene aside from that (and some questionable choreography). It's not flashy like a lot of anime fights, it's more like something you would have expected real actors to do at the time.

That's pretty much it. That scene was more about how Garnet, the red girl with the gauntlets, was feeling because she was revealed in this episode to actually be two gems fused together because they're in love, and Jasper, the orange girl with the helmet, was telling her they're only fused together to be stronger and that it doesn't actually make them strong but is instead just a cheap war tactic. The song is pretty much telling Jasper to fuck off and that she is stronger ESPECIALLY cause she's two gems fused together. It's a great moment, but the original poster is stupid to call it the best /co/ fight scene of all time.

Anime tends to cheap out on normal animation so they can save their budget for fight scenes, which is why lots of conversations are just mouths moving.

A lot of things are reused in many series (particular animations, certain backgrounds)

Copying other series is also fairly common (gif related)

There's also the studios thing; while America tends to send off it's work to foreign studios (notably Korea) in order to get fast, cheap animation, Japan has another system.

What a lot of big series will do is have multiple studios do work on different episodes. Dragonball Z is a big one for this, where the series was done by a bajillion different studios. This is why animation quality varied radically between episodes.

Not all anime have fight scenes in them, and even if they do they don't necessarily pour a lot of time into just them. And as I explained before, dialogue scenes aren't just mouths moving.

Reusing animation is not common, and for backgrounds it's usually establishing shots that get recycled.

Copying/referencing other anime happens, but I've not seen anything to indicate it's "common."

Yeah, you're right. I guess I was thinking of Shounen more than anything else, because that is where you get the most fights.

Smaller series tend to do a lot better with their animation, especially when they're planned out from the get-go.

You can see the difference in things like the 2011 HxH and FMA Brotherhood. When they can plan out budgets for the entire series before making it they do so much better.

I think I might rewatch Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo later.
