You can't do Zelda in a way that uses the plot of any of the games, but you can't ignore the canon that the games created, and nothing you make will have as many hours of plot as any of the games had.

There is an inherent flaw with video game movies and believe it or not it's not a flaw coming from the video game side.
In a video game, a story is told through gameplay. It is an active experience. Whether it's Mario saving the princess or it's Franklin, Trevor and Michael doing a heist, you aren't just watching it happen, you're making it happen. The events of the story are happening partially to you!
A movie is a passive experience. you're watching event happening to *other* people. You can connect with those people to be sure, but it's not the same as when events happen to you. Making a game into a movie removes the games greatest storytelling tool, the gameplay.

I am honestly dreading this.
I am a huge Nintendo fan but I can only expect this to end up being garbage if the people actually working at Nintendo are involved at all. They have never developed any good cinematic game, and the few attempts that they have made make me doubt that they are capable of doing so. The only good games they've made where the story was actually pushed by, well, the story instead of the gameplay, are the Mother games. And as far as I know that was pretty much all Itoi.
You could make an argument for Majora's Mask but I think that mostly worked because it was interactive.
If they go through with this and actually keep the strict amount of creative control I would expect them to, I would expect we get something with about as much quality as a subspace emissary cutscene. Except 90 minutes long.

Remember the game manual from Zelda 2? The plot setup had a sub-story of why all princesses were named Zelda. None of those flashback events or characters appeared in the actual game. It seems like the game manual story, would be a good basis for a movie plot. The only tricky part is that it still has to end with Zelda being asleep behind "the door that does not open", instead of a full happy ending. The rest of the story is so short, almost anything could be in the movie.

I think Miyamoto's main argument is to not over complicate things by adding in story where there really doesn't need to be one. As an example, you don't really need a story in Tetris and the addition of one would probably hurt the game more than it would add to it.
In terms of Mario, I suppose there could probably stand to be some form of story but the gameplay of Mario must always take the center stage. The Rosalina section of Galaxy was well done, but part of why it worked well is because it is somewhat out of place. It seemed better and hit harder because it was in a gmae it usually wouldn't be in.

Can I ask, when did video games that had both GOOD gameplay and GOOD story telling (Keep Sonic examples out here) that Mario can't possibly do? There's a point of "don't fix what ain't broken" and when you're playing it so safe you're effectively killing the old fans of the series? 90% of people I heard that loves Mario just wants to see "more story" as in, just a bit so you're not playing Super Mario Bros 1 for the fucking 1000th time for 30 years in a row. That's the point here, we're not asking for Metal Gear Solid levels of dialog here, leave that amount of story to Paper Mario...oh wait.
