Here's my idea:
You got Red hood doing mercenary work overthrowing some terrorist organization, just like before, only you put focus on the rammifications of his actions, ex: People losing their homes, civilians getting killed, etc.
Jason, after killing the head honcho, sees mess he made in order to take down this guy and, shocked, dissapears for a few weeks.
We follow his thoughts while he stays in a hotel room (maybe in Gotham, maybe somewhere else). He finally decides that his current ways are not what he really wants. He wants to be seen as a hero again, so he gives up being RH.
After that he goes to Wayne Mansion, tells Bruce his thoughts and leaves, telling him to give him a call if something big comes up (so editorial can have Jason in events if they want).
Lastly, we see a lady sitting in her desk in a GCPD recruitment center (or whatever they have for something like this). A man approaches her and tells her he wants to join in.
"Name?"

That was Nightwing One Year Later arc. The Search for Ray Palmer is the series of oneshots where the guys and Bob visit many different Elseworlds. It was pretty fun.
Actually it turns out I was mistaken, the vore monster thing was in the horrible Nightwing arc. Countdown was just horrible because it was Countdown. This things all start to blend together when you try to block them out.
