They were in a fucking duel. Close calls situations happen even in the most controlled combat environments. Hell Paku ends the fight trapping her with ice spears that he's very fucking lucky didn't skewer her straight through. That doesn't mean either was trying to kill the other.

Just based on what we've seen of waterbending in the show, that shit probably wasn't close to lethal anyway.

This, we don't have time to deal with societal customs right now, there is a great war going on and training someone that has been the travelling companion of the Avatar, a person that personally knows his strengths and weaknesses is a great idea.

Plus, that saves the Northern Water Tribe a member from leaving the tribe to go on the journey and he can stay home to defend the city. It's literally a win-win, Aang gets someone who knows how to train him and the NWT can keep a member from going away.

If someone wants to make a big tiff out of this, then save it for a time where the whole world isn't at stake.
