Can someone tell me why Badroc the leaper comes off really well in Gwenpool a book that's arguably a comedy yet all of his other appearances since 2000 mock him? I understand Silver Age Villains are silly but all comics are silly. I really like seeing Badroc be an intimidating professional with a joke or two about him instead of him being the joke.
Anyone else feel this way? Any other silver age characters who get the shift? stilt man
>>
>>82744789
Batroc le Leapair is just a normal human that is trained and doesn't use super-tech. Power-creep means he is useless in theory.
>>
>>82744789
He was really good in captain América sam Wilson comic before secret wars, where he was making fun of americans.
>>
>>82744789
>>82744858
Yep, it's probably because Gwenpool has no powers anyway, so he can be a threat to him, as you say.
>>
>>82744789
Hastings has a fondness for Batroc, while everyone else only sees him as a jumping guy who gets in peoples' way.
>>
>>82744789
>I really like seeing Badroc be an intimidating professional with a joke or two about him instead of him being the joke.
>Anyone else feel this way?

Agreed. Also I generally find the writers who feel the need to "mock" older villains like Badroc tend to be the hack-fraud writers.

Batroc is generally cool because he is a mercenary that is not beyond "accidentally" fucking his employer's plans if they are too evil. He has style and grace.

And he is not overused so you don't see him involved in any of those messy end of the world melees so you can just assume he is doing his own thing.

I've only seen this in Deadpool comics.

He was a legit threat in Heroes For Hire, in the early Iron Fist books, in Captain America/Iron-Man, in JLAvengers.

It's only really in Deadpool where he isn't taken seriously. He just shows up there more often than he does in other books.

Deadpool comics find an easy target for jokes in the form of Batroc, Stiltman, Taskmaster, and Paste Pot Pete. That doesn't mean other comics don't take them seriously.
>>
>>82747158
You can always spot a Deadpool fan (as opposed to a comic book fan) by how they perceive most C-Listers like Batroc, Boomerang, et all.
>>
>>82748467
>Boomerang
Superior Foes Boomerang is not Boomerang.
>>
>>82748609
Superior Foes Boomerang comes directly from Thunderbolts Boomerang. That's a good five years of consistent, solid characterization, more than he's ever had in the past.

Batroc had a nice one shot a couple years back when Bucky was Cap I think.

The thing about Batroc is that he is an extremely good mercenary who jobs like proper team player when he fights super-types.
>>
>>82747082
That's what made brave and the bold aquaman so good.

And more importantly it managed to bridge the gap between the public perception of the character and what he is really like.

The silver age was from mid 50s to mid 70s. A reference point for it's end is when Gwen Stacy died.

Batroc is great when there's a bit of a joke to him, because Batroc is kind of a silly concept. He's got an absurdly thick French accent and a ridiculous mustache and outfit, his powers are basically a weird national stereotype, and his stated motivation for doing crime is basically "What fun!"

But the fact is, Batroc is a guy who's taken "pretty good at kickboxing" and used it to become one of the few people on the planet who can give Captain America a pretty good fight, and there's something really admirable about that. Batroc is one of those villains who it's hard not to root for, especially when he's a genuinely likable character when he isn't surprise-jumpkicking people. He's jovial, charismatic, a graceful loser, and always seems to be having a great time. Whenever him and Cap fight, it's always a treat, because there's this sense that neither combatant would really mind losing that much (if the world wasn't usually at stake when they fight, anyway).
>>
>>82751212

>>
>>82751383
I kind of like it, but I have no problem with his classic look either.
>>
>>82744789
*Because* it's a comedy book and in comedies silly looking characters are allowed to act seriously once in a while.
You see, it's sort of like Zack Snyder said "characters talking in silly costumes for more than 5 lines is sort of, like.... yeah". By that I mean if your shit is going to take itself seriously, a Frenchman from Algeria in a garrish purple and orange getup sporting a dastardly mustache is going to look out of place and silly.
But if the context embraces the silliness, then he won't look out of place and you won't need to remark how silly he looks.
>>
>>82751215
His costume looked nothing like the comics version, he didn't have a mustache and he had a horrible French-Canadian accent.

>>82751293
His stereotype is also severly outdated. He's a "Pied Noir" French from Algeria, and those people haven't existed in about 30 years.
Fun fact: if he's historically accurate, he's probably jewish.
>>
>>82752230
He's not from Algeria at all in the comics.
>>
>>82750373
for Marvel it's The Death of Gwen Stacy, for DC I think their's continues till Barry Allen kills Reverse Flash
>>
>>82745805
She is a horrible shot. It's not plot armor like everyone else says, it's actually the reverse, in that she can only hit unnamed henchmen.
>>
>>82752129
Anon, in Gwenpool Batroc is played completely straight, with total sincerity. He's the best martial artist on the team and could probably easily beat everyone else there, and acts as such.
Given that non-Cap books treat him as a joke (unlike Paste Pot Pete or Stiltman who are treated as jokes even in their own books), it's kind of weird.

There's a great page where Batroc describes how he's not the guy who beats Captain America, but I can't remember the source or how it goes exactly.
>>
He was the disadvantage of his abilities being "really really good at martial arts" without the distinction of being superhumanly good at martial arts like Iron Fist, Shang-Chi, etc. It means he gets kept grounded and some writers will write him off as a consequence. Also the mostly static action scenes in American comics aren't kind to his whole deal.
>>
>>82745805
He's been around since the silver age. His plot armour is far greater than hers.
>>
>>82753755
He's not the guy who defeats Captain America.
He's the guy who can fight Captain America and keep him busy while the job is being done.

The author is the same guy who does the Dr. McNinja webcomic. He's been running that thing for years, and its main villains include.
1. Ronald McDonald
2. The Burger King (but actually he's the ruler of the radical lands in another dimension)
3. Dracula
4. Steven Seagal
5. Retarded pirates
6. A lobster man
7. A giant lumber jack
8. A pony that transforms into a motorcycle

Basically, this is an author who takes incredibly silly concepts and then makes them threatening to his main character in spite of the doofiness. It's kind of his bread and butter.

>>
>>82759085
It's basically Steven Seagal. That vein of thing. The main character is a ninja and one of his nemeses is a cheesy ninja movie actor. His actual name is Franz Raynor.

With the help of a tiny scientist, he once genetically engineered a super ninja, but they could only make one because it was too expensive and it would be unreasonable to pay for more.

>>
>>82751145
Batroc has got to be one of the classiest old-school villains out there.
>>
>>82751293
The best part is when the world is ACTUALLY at stake Batroc will switch sides. I think he only sticks to fighting Cap because he likes fighting Cap and respects him and even considers him something of a friendly rival.

In Iron Fist's debut series when he looses to Danny he's all "GG man, I'll head out now", and the guy spams a dozen more hired martial artists. Batroc considers this hugely unsporting and unfair, so he sides WITH Danny because of what a shit the guy who hired him was.
>>
>>82752230
