Well, within the story, members of the court, including Kat, try to treat magic as sufficiently advanced science.
But its not like it is unprecedented for Tom to explain how shit works. Its like with the way that gods and mythical monsters are created, or with blinker stones and utilizing the ether to do magic stuff, his world-building give the supernatural and fantastical elements some measure of structure and explanation beyond just saying its magic.
And unlike, say, EGShive, he does that without *regularly* devoting weeks of pages to dry, redundant dialogue describing the minutia of the magic system in exhaustive, autistic detail that nobody gives a fuck about. Broad strokes.

IF Smitty has super high charisma, that makes him sympathetic to pretty much every creature he encounters, then it could make him super sympathetic to the ether itself as well. If the ether keeps things going in the world, it might work in favour of Smitty simply because it likes him so much.
On the other hand, if karma is involved, it might eventually burden his own karma with so much goodwill from the world that it causes one big misfortune on him to even it out. But that's just a possible aspect of it, for which there is no clue in the story. But it might be a twist.

Assumedly, they're trying to ascend into Godhood via exploitation of the Ether, which is pretty standard villain behavior.
Coyote has evil parts about him, but I think that's to emphasize his nature as a god, as all gods aren't exactly moral exemplars.
