It's on record that many at Disney Animation Studios weren't expecting the James Earl Jones led Lion King to be the big hit that it was and instead were focusing on Pocahontas. I'm getting similar vibes with how Zootopia's monster success seems to have caught Disney off guard as plans for Moana merch have been available as early as late 2015, meanwhile Zootopia news of any sort only really started when the Sloth trailer dropped before Star Wars 7. I get what you mean. Personally, I think she looks plain, but yes, that's definitely a step down from deliberately beautiful, and her companion is actually REALLY ugly looking. Hell, even Quasimodo looked sweet enough to be ugly without being offensive looking, but this guy...Christ. I just plain don't want to even look at him.
I think a big part of the problem is that the animators of Disney 3D movies have really focused on one facial shape. Look at Elsa, Rapunzel, Anna, her mother, Rapunzel's mother, Judy, Gogo, Honey Lemon: all of them have heart shaped faces with extremely large eyes and small, depressed noses. I would be the first to note that some of those characters are related to each other, and there are crucial differences between them, but the similarities are still there. The same basic head shape and facial features are still present. Shaping that model to fit different races besides Europeans is probably something that the animators struggle with, and they would do better to shake things up. But since they've made some attractive women in the past with that model in mind, I suspect they're not willing to change things very much for fear of turning their audience off.
So what happens is you get this plain character who, in being shaped to fit this new race, becomes bland instead of striking, and it's frustrating when you want more facial diversity, especially as it applies across races.

All it will take is some Polynesian or half-Islander to say the movie is profiteering off the suffering of their people or some other such nonsense and that will be it. The issue is not color. You either make a very good product or have superb market. Don't expect people to throw money at you every time you shit.
