I actually really love that they went that route. Those were real creatures, they may not even be extinct people in India and tropical Asia have reported seeing giant orangutans for a long time.

Damn. I only read the book recently and had hoped small nods like that made it in instead of simply being mostly the disney movie. Still might give it a watch when I can. The hyponitism not working on Mowgli andthat being the reason he's able to save Bageerah and Baloo from walking into Kaa's mouth would've been a nice segment to include. It seems like the change to "Be like You" was well taken for the change in tone so another push of the envolope would've been cool to see.

There are a lot of nods to the bok, and many characters do have more of their original personalities and traits, such asKaa being nearly omniscient and knowledgeable, Bagheera being a powerful and respected hunter, the elephants being revered as the creators of the jungle, Baloo kicking some serious ass, and Akela and Raksha being badass, as well as scenes from/inspired from the stories, but on the whole it is more like the animtated film. But it is a whole lot darker and less silly than the original, I highly reccommend it.
