Whilst Jake himself didn't have much influence, and was primarily used as a narrative prop by other characters, there was an interesting concept developed through him. Namely, that some people just aren't that good around people, they flourish when left to their own devices even if those surrounding them have the best of intentions -though in this case they didn't.
However, there was no closure on this storyline given that in the finale we just see Jake seemingly reconciled with Dirk, who was one of the primary issues he had in dealing with others. Just another disappointment to add to the pile.

The kickstarter itself didn't delay HS, it was The Odd Gentlemen fiasco where he handed responsibility to them and they did fucking nothing and ignored all communication. He had to stop the comic so he could move house and go live on their front doorstep so he could get an answer about the game progress.
If he'd finished Homestuck, then by all accounts he would have produced the game himself, in-basement, with help from his friends, not a company who saw 2.4 million reasons to try and fleece an inexperienced idealistic creator.
