bruh, you aren't a Mexican national. You even knowing what a burrito is is a product of marketing. This particular instance of use of metrics and datamining might be benign, but you should at least be aware of that and the changes that very real phenomenon can have on the actual real world you live in.

xkcd goes through a love/hate pattern that is strikingly similar to the one that people go through with Ayn Rand

On normie/reddit tier, you have people who "FUCKING LOVE SCIENCE" and think it's deep/romantic

on pepe/angry 4chan autist tier, you have people who fucking loathe it and act like it's some horrific pretentious affront to civilization itself

Then you age beyond 25, and you gain the ability to appreciate the bits of wisdom and humor in it and not mind so much when he goes off the rails (which really, isn't that much nowadays)

CURRENT

YEAR
>>
>>82627596
>You don't know or agree with such and such thing? It's current year!

Thanks tumblr.
>>
>>82627007

I hate this argument. Americans do this whole little song and dance around free speech and it makes me puke.

As though hundreds of years of common law and political thought went into such a small and trivial interpretation of free speech. Under this limited dipshit interpretation, The Church could use it's soft political and social powers to censor opposition and that'd a-okay! A corporation could muster huge endless legal and financial hurdles to censor critics and as long as Uncle Sam didn't do it, it'd be kosher.

Taking this beautiful right of man with hundreds of years of precedence and history and boiling it down to the dumbest, most literal sense. It's fucking provincial.

t. Continental European. Yes I'm fucking mad.

>mfw still on the chan at almost 30
>>
>>82627659

The funny thing is that who is making this argument depends on what's going on politically

Like around the Iraq War kickoff conservatives were boycotting and ostracizing people who didn't support the war and it was all "OH BUT IT'S NOT CENSORSHIP IF THE GOVERNMENT DOESN'T DO IT" and liberals were all "OH BUT FREE SPEECH IS SUPPOSED TO BE MORE IN-DEPTH THAN THAT"

Now that it's liberals being heavy-handed and censorious, the arguments have switched
>>
>>82627696
t. computer engineer here and frankly I do way more with C++ than I do with Java
>>
>>82627659
>>82627659
You seem to be missing the part where that's not what this is even about. It's about people deliberately conflating the idea of free speech with a specific implementation of a law that relates to he topic of free speech. Much like you are doing right now, actually.
>>
>>82627758

Shut up faggot I'm almost 30 too and now you made me feel bad
>>
>>82627659
You seem to have a very poor understanding of scope and government. One private citizen or organization acting against another private citizen/organization is not a matter of free speech it's a matter of aggression. The laws which cover this matter are of a completely different nature than the "right of free speech" and I can assure you more countries have laws against the former than the latter. Because private entities imposing private philosophies on others is undermining the authority of the state.

The Church CAN censor whatever they want. But only in their own domain. In their churches, they can choose which is allowed to be said and what isn't. In their schools, they may be subject to some governmental oversight in order to get accreditation, but they still have a degree of right to censorship. Similarly when companies become companies (which are governmental entities) they take on certain obligations of oversight, but still maintain some rights to censorship. But if they tried to use their power to shut down someone else, that's not a violation of free speech, that's practically a declaration of war.

By attributing base things to violations of the spirit of free speech you're undermining what a novel and important concept it was.
>>

No, you only need to understand "a computer language" (which I seriously doubt you do) to get that there is no joke. It's just Randall Munroe ranting about other people's poor coding habits. If there were a punch line it would be in the first half of panel 3 and it's weak as fuck.

It's making fun of a common physics demonstration that illustrates the principle of energy conservation. Normally, like in pic related, the ball would stop just shy of the person's face, because the kinetic energy of the ball is converted in to the inital potential energy, so it won't go higher than when it started.

In the comic, hat guy is telling an unsuspecting bystander (who probably doesn't know the experiment very well) to stand right at the point where the bowling ball would have the greatest KE and lowest PE...

Java's a poor, unfortunate language abused, misunderstood, and tormented by managers tired of idiots' memory leaks and annoyed with C++'s feature bloat, not realizing that Java had at its outset more esoteric and hidden-away features than C++ ever grew into. A language full of high-level abstractions to make code intrinsically object-oriented, modular, and portable, it is most commonly used to write sequential tasks wrapped in UI and tied closely and linearly to APIs such that it only works in an extremely specific context.

>>
>>82628100

Nah

Frankly the good CS classes go out of their way to not make their material language-dependent

You'll learn this sort of stuff from coding and getting more and more into projects

The weird little hidden-away aspects of the different languages will slowly reveal themselves to you the more you work with them

Eventually, you'll begin to say, "Oh, THAT'S what they were going for when they added this feature"

Then, like in the comic, you'll begin to understand how much they're abused and misused
