Manga is extra-ordinarily broad, in terms of subjects. American comics are incredibly narrow, Eurocomics somewhere in between. And contrary to what Tumblr and /co/ think, it's perfectly to market to gender. It just becomes kind of weird when Americans try to make their one über-masculine supergenre appealing to women.
In terms of style, a lot of manga archetypes seem to appeal to women. Cute things appeal to women. They just do. Lots of manga looks cute as fuck. Lots of it IS cute as fuck, in terms of writing, too.
There's also cultural communication. Manga was fresh to the Western market, so it didn't carry a stigma of being "only for boys". This sort of thing can be quite powerful. I used to have a gf who thought games were literally nothing but sex and violence, until I explained what I like about them. When I asked where she even got this idea, the answer was "the other girls". Did they ever play games themselves? Of course they didn't.

but it's my private hobby and secret, no one knows. If I met a guy in real life who has read as many comics as me it would be an instant turn off and I'd never talk to him again for fear of getting pulled into a discussion that would reveal how well-versed I am.

I do, but probably not half as passionate as you guys. I am generally interested in comics and cartoons and have a medium shelf full of my favorites but I am not a collector or anything.
I guess guys just get more passionate about media-related hobbies than women do, so guys often think women 'dont really like' stuff.

Shit, I saw a page of Megg, Mogg & Owl, and I could only identify Amsterdam because Megg complained about tobacco in her joint. That's shitty art. Amsterdam does not look like whatever falling-to-pieces shithole the artist is from. That's not something that's down to "style", but simply lack of effort. In the age of Streetview and flights so cheap druggie burnouts can afford them, the artist of a universally acknowledged comic refused to look up pictures of the city he was drawing. This attitude is endemic in American comics.
