The only known trans character (Carla) is written terribly. She is shown to be extremely obnoxious on purpose, and an overall asshole. However when the fundie character very lightly called her out (no actual slurr was used, she simply told her "You belong in the boys dorm") Carla immediately shut down and became a meek mouse. Another character had to come to her rescue.
Carla is also one of the largest examples of white privilege in the comic Her parents are rich, her transition appears to be flawless, and the only antagonizing she is due to her own piss-poor attitude. Nobody, not even Mary, has said anything /pol/-tier about her at all. It has been all reactions to her behavior.
tl;dr: Carla is a trans person being written by a white cis male who has no idea what actual trans people struggle with. All her struggles are manufactured.

The comic is basically your standard slice-of-life comic filtered through the psyche of a manchild who's incapable of taking the slightest criticism and uses token support of racial and LGBT minorities to excuse shitty writing and unlikable characters.
The lesbians/bisexual girls in the series mainly consist of a pair of self-destructive alcoholics (who are, surprisingly, the best-written couple in the series), an Asian autistic girl who's mainly used for 'lol, she's so awkward' jokes, and Becky, who's every negative lesbian stereotype in one character. The one trans character is explicitly stated in her bio to be an asshole who goes out of her way to piss off other characters, and that narrative rewards her for it.
It's worse than pandering without substance. It's pandering that works against the demographic it's pandering to.

She is in rollerderby, but yea, no explosions, no standing up for herself. Just a deer in headlights look so the butch white lesbian can come and save the day. Carla is currently building some contraption to presumably get revenge on Mary, but hours/days after the fact it loses all meaning and comes off as Carla escalating and borderline assault. Meanwhile Mary, who actually gathered a bit of support (because, at the end of the day, Carla was making a scene in the hallway and Mary asked her to stop so she could study, Carla said no and purposefully made more noise, Mary reacted), is suddenly using slurs like 'queer', likely because Willis can't stand the fact she has people actually sympathizing with her.
Willis has a habit of making all his female characters awful human beings (on both sides of the political fence) and his male character meek and helpless. Unfortunately, Carla inherited both traits.

Nobody ever explicitly says it, but if two people in a group of friends date, the break up, the mutual friends begin to drift toward one or the other person. People don't outright take sides but they definitely weigh who they'd rather have around. It's awkward for everyone else to invite two exs to a party, or to hang out, or in general.
In Ethan and Danny's case, though, Danny assumes Ethan is loyal to Amber and will not talk to him because of that. Ethan knew Amber for a long time and he only recently met Danny. It's not an unfair assumption.

In my experience it rarely works out. If it was a quick fling that's one thing but if it was a legitimate relationship it's arguably more unhealthy for them to keep seeing each other. Better to cut loses and move on then potentially get invited to the same even and he/she shows up with a date and the other one doesn't.
