It's pretty good. The main complaints are

It's not your standard story were the likable protagonist wants to save the world from evil and that triggers people. It's pretty short for a popular anime so if you're interested in watching something different then I'd recommend it.Also Eva has the best waifus

I've become wicked anti-animu in my grumpy, old age, but I had a friend who, before he went off to college, watched all of Evangelion with me. One of the best fucking times of my life. It was a rainy spring weekend and we just binge-watched it while eating tons of junk food. Actually his grandma came over and brought us some Portuguese soup at one point. Whenever I eat kale now, I think of Evangelion. The show is probably shit, and I bet I couldn't stand it if I watched it again, but that's why I won't. I'll just remember being invested and really wanting to see what happened next.

Although Watchmen still doesn't have Evangelion's popularity--it wasn't just a hit with otaku, it was a mainstream hit too. It had such an impact that it popularized late night anime, created the modern anime character industry (to the best of my knowledge), and was indirectly responsible for turning Akihabara into an otaku town.

I'm from the cartoon part of the board. In terms of emotion, Moral Orel is closest to Evangelion, right ahead of Bojack Horseman. In subject matter, though, Bojack Horseman is by far the closest.
