No bait, why is this such a big deal among Spider-Man fans? It seems like both sides rely on the argument that the other side is dumb, rather than their own being better.

Growing entire web-spinning organs overnight is dumb yeah but so is being able to develop basically a whole new meta-material with insane levels of tensile strength and resistance. I assume that one was thought of because in when Spider-Man was created being a 'smart kid' meant 'a super-genius capable of building anything'.

Do you think all geniuses were autistic? You realize autism doesn't always correlate with high intelligence, and that the specific cases you're most likely thinking of are NOT high intelligence, right? For instance, the savants that make hyper realistic drawings usually can't draw from imagination for shit, they need a reference. Learning to draw well takes years of training. Talented people may simply be better at observation than others or have steadier hands, but you simply can't skip the process and expect to be any good at it.
>>
>>82439616
I always liked the organic webbing idea, but carrying different wrist bands in his belt that he designed, that transmutates the web as it shoots through, to have different properties. Igniting it for fights against symbiotes, expanding and liquefying it like a fire extinguisher for putting out fires, etc.

That way you don't have 'oh no, out of web fluid' in every episode, and you still show that he's smart as fuck.
>>
>>82441067
>Is smart enough to create the web and shooters

If Spider-Man is actually smart he should have far more ways in which to display this than just having synthetic webbing. Spider-Man, without the webbing, has a lame, generic power set that has nothing to do with spiders; their are innumerable Z-Listers with super strength and agility but organic webbing is actually unique.

>>
>>82441632
Anon... You've missed the point of the character.

First of all, he was one of the first characters with that powerset. Second, he became famous because he was one of the first superheroes to have actual character development as a normal person rather than a superhero - today it's par on the course or even cliche, but showing spider-man struggle with daily life and the consequences of his vigilantism as a high school kid was unique when it was first published. Third, his powers represent the proportional strength of a spider, and I'm not sure why you would think spiders aren't agile. If that wasn't enough you have the spider sense to represent a spider's finely attuned senses. Fourth, he's far stronger than most other characters with similar powers.

The joke is that spinnerets would be far more absurd than the web-shooters ever were.

Obviously it SEEMS to be more thematic for a "spider" lowercase-mutant to have something more recognizably spider like, but his arms would be bloated and misshapen if you had to fit extra organs in his forearms.

Whereas, if you're already on board with cape comics, it's a perfectly reasonable assumption to accept that Peter Parker is clever enough to invent, or repurpose existing technology to make web-shooters.

There's only one way to make organic webbing not terrible, and that's if it's a bioweapon that is actually built then surgically implanted into his wrists. not sure who would do that, marvel has a lot of geneticists and roboticists but not a lot of fleshweavers.

>>
>>82439616
I do like the organic version (it makes his powerset more spidery), but the magic totem rebirth bullshit the comics pulled was just dumb.
>>
Both the synthetic and organic webbing are complete and utter nonsense to explain. They run purely on comic book logic and to suggest one makes inherently more sense than the other is ridiculous.

The benefit of synthetic is that it means Peter's power relies more on his personal characteristics and skills, as well as the customization it provides. The benefit of organic is that it differentiates him more from the million other brilliant scientist characters running around the Marvel universe by giving him a more interesting base power set, playing up his spider inspirations and preventing the "oh no they gunked up/I rank out so I can't use it" trapping that the comics sometimes fall into when they need Peter to fail.

Ideally he should really have both. An unreliable biological web shooter that's created by his mutation, which he uses as an inspiration for his more advanced synthetic ones. That way he has all the benefits of the mechanical shooters, the explanation for how he figured out how to make them is less of a stretch, and when they he can struggle with the awkward hard to use organic ones as a makeshift backup.

It'd also end these retarded arguments.

Why is that a problem? Restrictions breed creativity. That might force him to be a little restrained when using his webbing so he's not empty when he really needs it. Artificial can be reloaded whenever, organic only replenishes a certain amount over a certain time.

Peter syould have synthetic webs because it works with all the usual neat tricks he can do with it + showcasing intelligence. Not to mention one of the great perks of the symbiote suit is that it gives him biowebs so that it's super great.
Bio-webs have no appeal other than allowing a skip in the movie of "I made webs and this is the result" to "oh cool guess I have webs".

But it leaves open the possibility it can. Or that he can power the web shooters up.

Say for instance he's fighting Venom and Venom is a whole new level threat. The writers can display this by having Venom break Spidey's webbing, showcases his badassness and have Peter lose the fight. Only to come back with Webshooters 2.0.

This showcases essential character traits such as Peter's ability to adapt and ingenuity

I never liked the idea of Peter Parker being a super genius and making super advanced weaponry with new chemicals he invents all by himself in his bedroom.

It's like, he didn't even need the spider powers in the first place. He could have been a super hero without being bit by a freaking spider.

I don't mind him being smart, but being a super-genius? Why? It just seems like a lame crutch for writers so Parker can invent any plot device needed.

Ah to be retarded and argue comic book logic. Comic book logic is fine with him having organic webshooters or aritificial. However it is original that he made artificial ones. Both are fine. It is a comic book world where the character you guys argue bout got bit by a irradiated spider and can now lift cars over his head rather than dying from radiation or neurotoxicity. Stop trying to draw a line in the sand because the line you are trying to draw is actually in the ocean and that just looks silly.
>>
>>82439884
>Mechanical webshooters: Can be altered to be thicker, longer lasting, highly corrosive, increased flame resistance, bulletproof, and block bomb signals among other things

I always thought this was super cheesy. It's like where Batman gets his ass kicked then spends a scene in his batcave developing an antidote/gadget that renders said ass kicking totally ineffective in the next fight.

Hell, this is exactly what happened in the Amazing Spiderman movie. Those scenes didn't make Garfield Spiderman seem any smarter than McGuire Spiderman, though.
>>

>>
>>82456351
I just think the idea of being one of the smartest people in the universe is silly.

I always felt the core of spiderman was extraordinary power being thrust on an ordinary kid. He never asked for the burden of power and the responsibility that comes with it but he must shoulder it nonetheless.

If he's the super genius then the character isn't about an ordinary person coping with fate's extraordinary burden.

It's about lil Einstein's fantasies of do-gooding.

>>
>>82456766

There's a difference between learning from your defeats and spending a short montage receiving a new gadget that trivializes an obstacle/opponent's entire shtick.

And showing Peter being more clever in how he overcame an obstacle rather than saying, "He's so smart, he made a gadget that's immune to it" is a far better illustration of intelligence. Not just on the part of Peter Parker, but also on the part of the author.

It's more because a recurring element of early Spider-Man is "oh god how will I pay for any of this my aunt is going to croak at any moment" and it's a bit anomalous for him to not, say, sell the formula for a superstrong adhesive that perfectly dissolves in mere hours and a launcher capable of firing it at hundreds of miles per hour, which he made on the budget of a high-schooler.
