It actually ended up helping. The point was to have the gun as a side arm for when the ring ran out of power, not as an actual substitute. It's literally just a back up, and pretty effective in terms of surprise because Green Lanterns end up captured and depowered all the damn time and never have any back ups besides scavenging something or repowering.
Having all the images of him wielding it around like it was his main weapon all the time was bit dumb.
