Like there was chemistry sure but the entire relationship happened during the off-panel portions of a retcon and the author didn't even bother being explicit about it at the end because all he had time for was ONE EPIC FIGHT SCENE and that's it.
The comic was trying to be all self-aware like "Ha ha it's a retcon, get it?" and the author is like "Ha ha it's going to be like the next Korrasami, watch out!" and from his track record usually that meant something which APPEARED shitty but was actually brilliant.

It's funny to me that the only thing about this show that's ever really talked about and remembered is its shit romances, and how terrible the writing is overall.
There's no one in Korra as likeable or memorable as Sokka, Toph, Bumi, Koh, Azula, Iroh, Ty Lee, and the freedom fighters. There's nothing in the show even remotely half as interesting as Airbender's subplots or one-offs.
Anything that Korra had that was any good was what it copied from Airbender. Beyond that, it's a great example that Bryke are basically a pair of twin George Lucas when it comes to writing and producing. Airbender was made great in spite of them, not because of them.
Every relationship in Avatar is forced because Avatar is poorly written.
