I hate this so much.

Steven Universe had numerous episodes with this.

And the one with Mayor Dewey especially on how he was lying about when the power would be returned to Beach City, and Steven defended him by saying that he lied to them out of love.

The people had a right to know so they could figure out what they were going to do already. Not spend time relying on false promises.

What SU usually goes for is that while the lie usually doesn't help matters, it doesn't mean that the liar should be vilified. The greater message is about community and understanding.

Super powered main character ... loses powers.

I'm not talking about Avengers/JLA being depowered so a supernormal like Bats or Green Arrow can save the day and show his worth. I mean: you sit down to an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and suddenly she's just a normal girl. Newsflash: if I wanted to watch a NORMAL UNPOWERED PERSON do shit I could be watching LITERALLY any OTHER fucking show!

This is right up there with the Ground Hog Day episode and the Freaky Friday Body Swap episode in the list of things that will get me to drop a comic or tv show at *lease* for the current arc.

There's also the CW favorite: "keeping secrets" for no logical reason other than the writer's want some "drama."

>acts like the nicest guy around literally anyone else

And it's not like the protag's friends don't trust him, they just for some reason listen to this kid they met 10 minutes ago over the guy they've known for a decade or more.

Fuck these episodes.

>>
>we need to beat this video game to advance the plot episodes
"Characters play video game" episodes are fine, like Regular Show's power glove or South Park's WoW episode, but if your killer is hiding themselves behind a video game, or your grand adventure takes you through an 8-bit world, you need to go fuck yourself.

>and Steven defended him by saying that he lied to them out of love.
You are missing the point of that episode big time.

This episode is about Steen realizing that the Crystal gems are being coy with him and Steven realizing why they are doing it by making a parallel with Mayor Dewey.

I mean it(s almost literally there:
>It's okay! It's okay! Mayor Dewey was hiding things from you but he did it because he didn't want you to worry!
>He was just sheltering you from the truth because he... *enlightenment and understanding dawn on him* He loves you.

Replace it with
>It's okay! It's okay! the Crystal Gems were hiding things from me but they did it because they didn't want me to worry!
>They were just sheltering me from the truth because they... *enlightenment and understanding dawn on him* They loves me.

Now the important part is that Steven right after that actually CONFRONT the gems and ask them to be frank with them. The moral, at the end, is actually that THE TRUTH ACTUALLY NEED to be told, as Steven make sure the gems finally get to be honest with him.

But the moral is also that when people lie to you, it's not always out of malice, but because they care, even if it's not the right things to do. Lying doesn't make one a bad person and that's the other moral of that episode.

So don't have your characters become rich in the first place. Use a one-off character or don't do that plot at all.

Or have the sack to change a character's situation rather than dryhumping the status quo.

Ehhh, I can see where you're coming from, but...not really, no.

First movie, Po didn't really fight the villain so much as he Deus Ex Machina'd the villain.

Second movie, the villain was still far superior to him in terms of fighting skill, but the villain's hubris was his own downfall. Plus more Deus Ex Machina in the form of "suddenly learning how to do a new move that just happens to hard-counter the villain's main weapon".

Third movie devolved into spirit world magic bullshit, so even more Deus Ex Machina.

Well in 1 it wasn't as bad as you think. They show that Tai Lung's main weapon was the pressure point business, not just superior fighting ability. Without his trump card he had to fight on an even field but with desperation clouding his judgement, tipping the odds in Po's favor so he could deus ex machina the finger hold.

I like how Drive handled it, apparently in order to soften up the character's silent, violent and isolated nature they had synth pop playing while he was being more human compared to his cold and professional career criminal persona.
They didn't have to go all the way to the opposite side of the spectrum and show him walking around in a pink cheerleader outfit.
>Winding Refn chose to give the Driver very little dialogue and instead have him drive around listening to synthpop music, taking control when it counts
See this is the difference between someone who knows how to use various media to convey something subtly and the hacks who go for whatever cliché or stereotype will get them by.
Of course the Driver character has now lead to its own subset of clichés but that's not the point.

>>
>>82389111
And what would exactly saying the truth achieve?

Steven realized the test wasn't for him but for the gems. And he could either act petty and small-minded, spoiling it all - or he can be the better man and act exactly as they hoped he would just so they can feel better.

Existing in an environment where a small white lie means nothing to you (except that you had to lie, oh no) but a whole lot to other people is a part of being an adult. That so many anons here hate the episode's message just makes me think a lot of /co/ isn't emotionally fully mature yet.
>>
>>82389448
All I can say is I'm glad not to have you as a family member. Having an honest heart to heart with the gems would have been infinitely more productive for their relationship than bullshitting them into thinking they were bullshitting him into being happy.

The point was that the roles reversed and Steven finally understood where the Gems were coming from, and understood that he was now in the position where he needed to consider doing the same. Sometimes people just need to believe something. He realized that just as much as they thought he needed to believe he was useful, they needed to believe they were doing right by him. So he did what he had to do to boost their confidence.

I thought it was a great episode to showcase how mature Steven has gotten. And it's not as if it was an outright lie: he DOES need their support. Though I won't argue that the better option would be for him to talk with them, tell them that he understood what and why they were doing this, and telling them that it wasn't necessary and they could be realer with each other.
>>
>>82390948
That's something you do afterward. If you do it right then, you're hurting them more for literally no reason.
>>
>>82391049
Depends how you do it, I think. It seemed to me that when Steven realized why they were doing this, he appreciated that they were looking out for him like that. He's a charismatic kid, he could figure out how to frame it so it didn't hurt. Come from a place of appreciation of their intent, and it won't be inherently hurtful.

You don't know what a Deus Ex Machina is. Po won in the first movie because he played on Tai Lung's obsession with the scroll, and both one and two the methods were heavily foreshadowed, with two having the technique being the main focus of the damn movie. Nothing in the trilogy came out of nowhere, each technique was foreshadowed at some point, which is not a Deus Ex machina by definition.
